It's Countdown Monday!

Every Monday we give an update on Achieving the Vision, the $8.62 million campaign for the Orono Public Library.

There are 59 days until the end of the campaign, July 31. As of May 31st, the campaign total contributed is $$8,195,984 (just $4,016 away from the $8.2 mark!)

Since April 21st, donors have contributed $630,432 to the library campaign! Can we get lots of likes for so much generosity?

We need $424,016 to reach the goal, and we will get there, one dollar, one gift, at a time. Don’t let the campaign end without you!

Your gift in any amount will bring us one step closer to reaching our July goal. Join us today!

Visit https://new.oronolibraryfoundation.org/achieving-the-vision/ to make a secure gift online, and your support of the campaign will be counted immediately!

It's official -- the OPL Youth Garden Club is about to commence, 2026 edition! Join us next Tues (June 2nd) at 3:30 pm at the Youth Gardens (adjacent to the Orono Thrift Store)... and any Tues, thereafter, through September! If you're new to the youth garden, this program is open to all ages, is free, and no registration is required... drop in when you can! Make sure to bring a water bottle and some form of sun protection (e.g., hat, sunscreen).

We are thrilled at the activities planned for the upcoming season... and the snow peas that we planted at the May pop-up event are already emerging! We have some exciting new trellis structures, and a new children's flower garden... dahlia tubers in the ground, and more. We're so excited to learn and grow with you this season!

On Tues (Jun 2nd), we will plant seed potatoes, generously donated by Evermay Nursery. We also have tomatoes, dahlias, flower seeds, and ground cherries to plant... and lots of garden bed prep, watering, and weeding to do! Hope to see you there!

We had an incredibly enthusiastic crowd of children and community members join us on Tuesday for the first Youth Garden event of the 2026 growing season -- i.e., our garden "pop-up" in honor of sowing early crops... and celebrating the last early-release day of the school year.

More than 30 participants got their hands dirty (despite the cloudy skies), as we inoculated and planted snow peas beneath our spiffy new trellis set-up! We also planted zinnias, cosmos, love-in-a-mist... and a hearty bed of spinach. Closer to the library, children helped us plant our containers on the OPL patio -- replete with beautiful companion flowers from Evermay Nursery. We celebrated a special fifth-year birthday for a little one that has been with our Youth Garden program since its inception. As so often happens with this program, our session ended with lots of community building, glorious conversation with caregivers, and unstructured play (from tree-climbing to hill-rolling and dandelion-picking) -- the very essence of childhood.

We are feeling so hopeful for the coming months... as we "Plant a Seed, Read" and grow our gardens! Our official garden program begins on Tues, June 2nd at 3:30 pm -- and follows on every Tues through Sept. Please join us!
