University Volunteer Ambulance Corps (UVAC) Official page of the University Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Proudly serving the UMaine community for over 50 years! πŸš‘

UVAC is a student volunteer organization, which offers aspiring University of Maine students unique learning and leadership opportunities by delivering emergency medical services both on the University campus and to surrounding communities. A state licensed emergency medical service, UVAC provides quality emergency medical care to those who live on, work at, or visit the University of Maine campus

. The service consists of about sixty volunteers – a combination of students and staff from various University departments, as well as a few community members. About half are EMTs, while others serve as drivers and assistants. All share a common interest in helping others. Operating as part of Auxiliary Services, UVAC members volunteer nearly 30,000 hours to the campus community each year. We have approximately 500 calls per school year.

Earlier this season, Officer Alicia Matthes was invited to throw the ceremonial first pitch at the America East Softball Tournament. This opportunity represents the hard work Alicia has dedicated to coordinating EMS standby operations at all of the University of Maine’s D1 sports events.

Congratulations to Andrew Gregory for being voted April 2026 Member of the Month!

Andrew has been a familiar presence at UVAC, frequently filling secondary shifts and working to become driver cleared. Always being excited to work, we love having Andrew on our team.

Congratulations again Andrew!

Happy EMS week!

This week, we want to take a moment to recognize the commitment EMS clinicians make to their communities. The job demands a lot every single day, and that level of reliability and dedication does not go unnoticed. To the EMS professionals who give so much of themselves to keep their communities whole: thank you.

This past weekend, UVAC and Old Town Fire Rescue assisted the boys from Troop 76 in earning their Search and Rescue merit badge. We learned about search patterns, maps, executing a search, and providing on-scene first aid.

Congratulations to the scouts who completed their badge and thank you to OTFD for helping us with this event.

One of the things we pride ourselves on most at UVAC is our trainings.

We do our best to provide our members with high fidelity simulations that closely match the conditions of a real call. One of the biggest challenges we face here on campus is tight elevators, narrow staircases, and small hallways. At one of our recent trainings we performed scenarios in a dorm building to practice using patient extraction devices and teach our newer rookies proper lifting and moving techniques.

Congratulations to Owen Bulmer for being voted February 2026 Member of the Month!

This semester, Owen has put in significant effort to become cleared as a driver. Owen also became licensed as an EMT over the summer and has been working as a field crew and on the truck in an effort to clear as a primary. We love Owen's joyful presence and the positivity he radiates while at base.

Congratulations again and thank you for your hard work Owen!

UVAC had a successful weekend in Arlington, Virginia at the conference!

Our members had the opportunity to attend several workshops and roundtables to improve their leadership and clinical care skills. We even had our very own Chief of Service present on creating high fidelity simulations on a tight budget. UVAC was also awarded MERIT Recognition and recertified as a HEARTSafe campus for another four years!

We are incredibly grateful to all the staff from the National Collegiate EMS foundation as well as the speakers who made this year’s conference possible and we look forward to next year!
