When a vehicle needs to be stabilized and occupants need to be safely removed, firefighters rely on specialized extrication equipment.

Stabilization struts help secure the vehicle, while hydraulic rescue tools, commonly known as the “Jaws of Life,” help firefighters cut, spread and create access to trapped occupants.

This equipment plays an important role in vehicle extrication and helps our crews work safely and efficiently when it matters most.

The first Mini Muster of the school year was today! The kiddos at Wilson K-8 had a blast learning about some procedures they can implement at home to be more prepared in case of a fire. And, for this warm September day, there was plenty of splashing and spraying to help cool off.

As we close out Drowning Prevention Month, we’re sharing one final reminder: drowning prevention starts with awareness, preparation, and taking water safety seriously every time.

Small actions can make a meaningful difference. Stay attentive, be prepared to respond, and make water safety a priority whenever you’re in or around the water.

Let’s carry these reminders beyond this month and continue working together to prevent drowning and keep our communities safe.

What happens to a firefighter’s gear after a fire?

After a fire, firefighters bag their turnout gear to contain the chemicals, toxins, and debris they may have picked up. The gear is then brought back to the station and cleaned using specialized equipment designed to remove contaminants.

It’s an important part of our commitment to firefighter health and safety, long after the fire is out.

Say hi to Poppy! 🐾
Poppy is a 4-year-old certified therapy dog who visits stations and facilities throughout our district, bringing comfort, joy, and plenty of tail wags wherever she goes. With the help of her owner, Procurement & Supply Specialist Andy Smith, Poppy received her Therapy Dog certification through the Pet VIP program at the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

She’s a frequent visitor at Oro Valley Hospital and Northwest Hospital, where she’s often joined by Scout, Northwest’s resident therapy dog. Poppy is also a familiar, furry face at Golder, and we’re always happy when she stops by for a visit! 🐶

We’re grateful for the important work therapy dogs like Poppy do in our community!

Southern Arizona has experienced some record-breaking heat in the past few days. It’s crucial to remember that no one, including children and pets, should be left unattended in a car, even for a minute.

Intense, dangerous heat is gripping parts of the country this week as temps soar into the triple digits. 🥵🌡️

It's critical to remember just how quickly a car can heat up. Never leave a child alone in a vehicle — not even for a minute!
