Upon discovering that our beachside island was without a formal name, a select committee of area historians was formed to rectify the situation. After considering over 100 names that were submitted by the readers of
The Hometown News a suitable name was agreed upon. The thin strip of land that extends north from Ponce Inlet to the south side of Matanzas Inlet shou

ld henceforth be referred to as Coquina Sands Island. We would urge you to use it in any future correspondence to hopefully eliminate the prevalent and incorrect reference to the peninsula that is now used by so many. With your help we can give our no-name island an identity. Sincerely,
