A Florida delegation—led by Governor Ron DeSantis, FL Secretary of State Cord Byrd, and Jeanette Nuñez Jeannette Nuñez—participated in the signing ceremony of a Letter of Friendship between Florida International University and Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. With this act, the universities formalised a collaboration link between their respective Adam Smith institutes, celebrating both America250 🇺🇸 and the 250th anniversary since the publication of “The Wealth of Nations.”

Published by Scottish economist and philosopher Adam Smith in 1776, the book is a foundational text of modern economics, arguing for free markets, the division of labour, and limited government intervention.

The ceremony took place at Panmure House, the home of Adam Smith, currently housing the university’s center of excellence for the study of contemporary economics.

Productive discussions in London brought together UK and Florida leaders to advance the next phase of the Memorandum of Understanding on Trade and Economic Cooperation.

As part of the programme, an insurance roundtable explored how like-minded partners can work together to address shared insurance challenges and support more resilient, affordable markets. The conversation also highlighted opportunities to harness London’s world-leading expertise in insurance and financial services to help drive growth and innovation in Florida, where Governor DeSantis’ administration has introduced significant reforms to reduce insurance costs for consumers in recent years.

We were grateful to hear insights from Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida Insurance Commissioner Michael Yaworsky, and Lady Mayor of City of London Corporation Dame Susan Langley, on strengthening transatlantic collaboration and creating practical, sustainable solutions that benefit businesses and communities on both sides of the Atlantic.

From insurance reform to financial innovation, the UK-Florida partnership continues to turn shared ambition into real-world cooperation and economic growth. 🤝

The fifth Working Meeting under the UK-Florida Memorandum of Understanding on Trade and Economic Cooperation took place in London this week.

One of the most advanced partnerships of its kind, the UK-FL MoU continues to demonstrate strong commitment from both sides, with growing collaboration in high-potential sectors, such as space and financial services. The meeting coincided with Florida’s largest delegation attending the Farnborough Airshow International Airshow, further enhancing the strength of our economic ties.

To deepen cooperation in the space sector, the UK and Florida signed an agreement launching a joint innovation fund for research, development and commercialization projects between FL and UK-based companies.

The two delegations also explored ways to enhance collaboration in the financial services sector, including insurance, building on our shared ambition to turn strategic partnerships into tangible outcomes for businesses and communities on both sides of the Atlantic.

Great to see Florida making a strong showing at the Farnborough Airshow International Airshow, which opened its doors today to the global aerospace, space and defence community.

Our Trade & Investment team was there to attend the inauguration of the Florida Pavilion, where Governor Ron DeSantis officially cut the ribbon, welcoming partners and visitors, and highlighting the growing strength of the Florida-UK space partnership.

His remarks reinforced the shared ambition driving transatlantic partnerships across aerospace, space, defence, trade and investment.

With Space Florida, SelectFlorida and partners from across the state leading the way, the Pavilion is showcasing the innovation, talent and areas of collaboration that continue to strengthen UK-Florida ties and create jobs and investment opportunities on both sides of the Atlantic.
