This is a fairly large hook tied to a rope was swallowed by this female softshell turtle. The poor turtle was tangled up in it causing damage to the side of her face. The damage to he face is scared over so she has been like this for a while. The hook was removed using an endoscope with gator retrieval tool that was sent down the scope provided by Endoscopy Support Services, Inc.
This job is extremely tedious in the sense that once I got the hook from the tissue, it needed to come out in a certain position as to not snag or touch anything else on its way out. But we were able to retrieve the hook with rope attached!Although this video is only a couple minutes long, the procedure took a couple hours.
Please fish responsibly, this is not the first time we have encountered this situation. If you hook a turtle and you're unable to retrieve it yourself safely, then please seek local help from a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or vet for removal so the animal can return safety to the wild hook free!

This male peninsula cooter was pond hopping across a busy road out looking for ladies when he was struck by a car.
The light cure gel is great for lite duty claps ( no pun intended) you can never have enough tools in your tool box! Show some love for this handsome guy!

This is a record to get 11 sick tortoises in less than 2 weeks time from all over the state. It's hitting us hard $$ because labs and testing cost not to mention treatment costs add up fast. On average it's 300 to 500 or more per sick tortoise and sadly only 1 person out off all these cases made a donation with drop off. We want to help as many as we can and the latest bill equals above 1,000 and thats not meds just testing!
We have a zeffy that is fee free, posted in comments, our website mentioned in the video and then the Facebook fundraiser attached to this post.

This Florida box turtle is much happier now!
Some of you may remember the box turtle with the swollen bulging eyes that came in a couple months ago, he is looking much different now.
I don't have a definite answer on what happened as some tests are still pending but it's suspected that he was sprayed with some type of lawn treatment causing inflammation and severe irritation. He is back home now and seemed very happy to be there!

I honestly have no words, the nomination was a surprise as it was then to also win volunteer of the year was an even bigger one.
The FWRI wildlife health team and the crocodilian research team are amazing hardworking people. I am honored to help push to get answers and strive to make a change for our wildlife. Team efforts are what makes the difference in this world. We must come together to support the science to uncover the mysteries and make necessary changes. Yes, volunteering means no pay but what we can accomplish together is priceless. It's not about the money but the lives we save along the way! From Turtle frasier virus, snake fungal disease, gopher tortoise diseases to bloated alligators there is still so much more we need to do and I am just getting started.
I thank everyone for your support, it's not easy to juggle everything that I do but it's a choice I have made to make a difference and I don't plan on quitting anytime soon 😉

And this is Billy, the 3rd bloated alligator currently in care. The girls take their meds no problem but Billy, well, he is not as willing so I have to chase him around a bit to get him in just the right position to toss the meatball with the hidden meds in his mouth. A daily adventure for both of us! I really wish he would be a bit more fierce and open that mouth but he says nope 😆
