Joyce Public Library

The Joyce Public Library serves the town of Orland, IN, and the surrounding area of Millgrove Township. We also house Orland's historical collections.

The Joyce Public Library was founded by Dr. William Joyce and his two sisters, Mary Joyce McKinley and Eliza Joyce. It was dedicated on March 24th, 1903, as a gift to the town, and occupied the second story of the brick building at the corner of State Road 120 and State Road 327. The original library, with its oak woodwork and cork floors, remains on the second floor. The second floor of the buil

ding also houses the historical collections of the town of Orland (viewing by appointment). The current town library on the first floor was renovated in 1995, and has many class photos of Orland High School from 1897-1964. We have winter and summer reading programs for children. we also sponsor a boat in the United Way's Cardboard Boat Regatta each summer, and participate in Orland Town Cruise-Ins (the town fills with historic cars once a month in summer). HEY KIDS!!! Our loyal patron, Michelle, wanted to honor Dolly Parton and her love of children and books so she donated a shelf unit, some butterfly decorations and some children's books with instructions to give the books away to our young patrons when they come into the library.

Join us on an after-hours, spooky fieldtrip to Joyce Public Library to discover what bumps in the night! Navigate through the library with the Underground Paranormal Network, searching for our ghost friends and participate in hands-on investigations using ghost hunting tools. It's time to unravel the mysteries that linger between the books! Registration is required, ages 16+ (minors must be accompanied by an adult). I'll confess...I stole this idea from another library but we've only begun and librarians and patrons (young & old) are already loving it. Stop by and add a word to the Library Scrabble Tabletop.

Today was the last day of our Middle School Summer Reading Club. We had three young ladies who did a terrific job of creating their own Fractured Fairytale. They took an existing, traditional fairytale and took what they learned about character development, creating a representation of where the story takes place, drew illustrations to go with their story and created a book cover. I was so impressed with the work that they did and how they embraced the project! I hope they had as much fun doing it as I had watching the progress they made over 6 weeks. As a reward they got to pick a Juvenile Fiction book from the library and were treated to sweet treats at Sweet Summers in Orland. Hope to see them again next summer. Have to start thinking of a fun thing for them to do! (Picture attached is not their work...😕I forgot to take a picture!)

Be sure to stop by the library this Saturday 8 a.m. - 12noon (while you're in town for the Vermont Settlement Days) and take advantage of the great buys at our USED BOOK SALE. We have something for all ages and interests. Hardbacks are $1.00 and softbacks are $ .50. It is a great way to support the library. Look forward to seeing you Saturday!!

Today the Summer Reading Kids had their own archeological dig. They discovered bones, coins, buttons, dinosaur eggs and dinosaurs. Messy (VERY) but fun! Many thanks to our volunteers, especially my hubby who got stuck with the clean-up.

We are thrilled to announce that the ramp for the West entrance to the library is now complete. The railing was installed on Tuesday and you may now safely use the ramp and stairs and enter through that door once again. So happy to be able to again offer this accommodation to our patrons and visitors with physical limitations or parents with strollers or for anyone wanting to access the library with the assistance of the ramp. The double doors on the West side will now be unlocked for you during our regular operating hours and also when we are open for Special Events. Thank you for your patience during this process. Come check it out next time you are in the area (and while you're at it come inside and check-out a good book!)

Week 3 of Summer Reading "Unearth a Story"...hatching dinosaur eggs and playing Dino Bingo. Can't what to see what we unearth next Tuesday!

Today was week 2 of our elementary-age Summer Reading Program. We travelled to the woodshop of Northeast Indiana Wood Workers where the kids were guided step-by-step on how to build their own wooden toolbox. These will be used later in the summer to assist them as we go on an "archeological dig" to try to unearth dinosaur bones here in Orland. All summer they are reading to "Unearth a Story", the 2026 theme for library programs nationwide. Each child has adopted a pet dinosaur and will research and share about in the six weeks we have yet to go. Watch Facebook for us having more fun!
