Orinda/Tábor Sister City Foundation

Orinda/Tábor Sister City Foundation The Orinda/Tábor Sister City Foundation organizes activities to raise awareness and educate local residents about the Czech Republic, and Tábor.

Following WWII, President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded the Sister City program as an approach to prevent future warfare and secure peace around the world. He envisioned that through the program, citizen diplomacy could accomplish what nation-states sometimes failed to do – to have the people of the world become friends. In that spirit, after the fall of Communism in Czechoslovakia, Orinda became S

ister Cities with Tabor, and the Orinda/Tabor Sister City Foundation was officially formed. Since its inception, the Foundation has been meeting once a month to organize activities to raise awareness and educate Bay Area residents about the history and culture of the Czech Republic, and specifically the City of Tabor. To that end, since 1999, the Foundation has brought the winner of a competition for Tabor’s high school students to study at Orinda’s high school each fall semester. Moreover, each year, the Foundation holds film screenings, holiday gatherings, and its members participate in civic activities, including the Mayor's Round Table sessions, and regularly report to the Orinda City Council. On numerous occasions, the Foundation has also facilitated local travelers, educators, and professionals’ visits and cultural exchanges to the Czech Republic, and vice versa.

Our friends in San Diego alerted us about a great magazine mainly for children of Czech compatriots living abroad. It was created on the basis of interest in helping with the learning of the Czech language and its further development. On their pages children learn about Czech culture, traditions, realities and Czech personalities. Check it out!
