Chief Walendzak was instrumental with the formation of Oregon Fire Explorer Post 5002 in 2001. It was with his blessing the post was able to form and become a great educational activity for youths to learn about the fire service. Many members of the post have gone on to become Oregon Firefighters or work Fire/EMS in other departments or agencies. Thank you for everything Chief , you will be greatly missed.

Upon his passing today 6/7/2017, we remember Chief Walendzak (Ret.). Here is some history of the Fire Department with him that we shared a few years ago when we highlighted his service here on our page:

OFRD History

At the time of Chief Gene Groll's appointment to Fire Chief, the City created the position of Full Time Assistant Chief and Raymond Walendzak was appointed to the position. In April of 1986, Chief Groll retired and Raymond Walendzak was appointed the City Fire Chief becoming the 3RD CHIEF OF DEPARTMENT.

Before being named Chief of Department, he was a member of Station #1, the Department's Maintenance Division, a Fire-Prevention Officer, a District Chief, and Assistant Chief of Department.

Chief Walendzak joined the Department in 1968 and retired in 2006 (serving 21 of those 38 years as Chief of Department).

Chief Walendzak served as President of the Ottawa County Fireman's Association, President and Secretary of the Northwestern Ohio Volunteer Firemen's Association and President of the Lucas County Ohio Fire Chiefs Association. Upon his retirement, Chief Walendzak became the last original member of the State of Ohio's Emergency Medical Services Board to retire after 14 years of service.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Walendzak family and those affected by the loss of Chief Walendzak. Rest assured, Chief Walendzak will never be forgotten by the members of the Oregon Fire and Rescue Department. May he Rest in Peace.

Be safe and be well.

Young men and women in the Oregon area between the ages of 14 and 21 are invited to become Fire Explorers with the Oregon Fire Explorer Post 5002.

Learn first-hand how exciting a career path in the field of emergency service is by working side-by-side with actual Oregon Firefighters. Fire Explorers assist with virtually all routine tasks in the community and around the fire stations, including community relations, fire prevention, equipment and station maintenance, and training.

Fire Explorers are provided with helmets, turnout gear, and other safety clothing. They are welcome members of the fire stations where they volunteer.

Becoming a Fire Explorer is an excellent way to develop qualities and gain experience that will be helpful in nearly any field of endeavor.
