Located in the heart of downtown, Darcelle XV Plaza honors the late Portland luminary Walter Cole, who enlivened the city in the Darcelle XV Showplace (the longest-running drag cabaret on the West Coast).

The day became a statewide holiday in 2001 thanks to a major push from one person: Clara Peoples. Peoples moved from Oklahoma to Vanport, Oregon in 1945. Vanport is a historically black city in Multnomah County destroyed by flooding in 1948.

Hockney's art is at the Portland Art Museum through July.

Artist David Hockney has died. He was 88. His paintings of pools shimmering in the Los Angeles sunshine became icons of 20th-century art.
