LLNRD Recreation Area/Shop Manager Phillip Hill is making quick work of a new interpretive sign project in the LLNRD Arboretum in Ord, even finishing up today as rain began falling. Stay tuned. Or, better yet, check out the Arboretum for a walk, run, or bicycle ride sometime soon. There are 60 species of trees and shrubs, a small wetland, an open grassy area, a concrete picnic table, and a shelter at the northwest corner. The new signage will be installed this week. It's a girl! The Nebraska and National Champion eastern cottonwood tree at Pibel Lake Recreation Area has been confirmed as being female. That's good, because Information and Education Coordinator Alan Bartels has been calling the tree "she" and "her" during school field trips.

The annual Progressive Agriculture Safety Day is taking place in Ord today at the Valley County Fairgrounds. Its a tradition dating back more than 30 years to when LLNRD District Secretary Bev Smedra helped to co-found the event with Kayla Hinrichs of Central IV 4-H and Nebraska Extension. In that time nearly 4,400 youth have learned how to be safer whether they are at home, on the farm or ranch, at the lake, etc. More than 80 partners/partnering organizations (and volunteers) helped make this event a success once again. CHEMIGATION PERMIT RENEWAL DEADLINE IS JUNE 1
Agricultural producers planning to use chemigation (fertigation) to apply fertilizer or other chemicals to crops have a deadline of June 1, 2026, for permit renewal from the Lower Loup Natural Resources District. Completed chemigation permit applications must be received by the Lower Loup NRD on or before that date.
The fee for chemigation permit renewal is $30 for each renewal application submitted. Applications received after June 1 will be treated as a new application.
New permit applications require a $100 fee and an inspection by an LLNRD technician. New and renewal permits expire the June after the year they were issued – chemigation permits issued in 2025 will expire on June 1, 2026.
Emergency permits are $500 and expire after 45 days.
Applications are available at the Lower Loup NRD Headquarters, 2620 Airport Drive, in Ord. They are also available at Natural Resources Conservation Service offices and can be downloaded at LLNRD.org.

LLNRD water and soil samplers, and agronomy techs, recently took a tour of Ward Laboratories, Inc. to discuss sampling methodology with Dr. Ray Ward. Which reminds us: most private domestic wells in Nebraska are not tested for pollutants of any kind. Please, if you get your water from a private well, get your water tested annually. Commercial labs can do that testing. Or, you can enlist the help of the state: https://www.nebraska.gov/dhhs/water-test-kits/private.html
