Students across the district recently mapped over 2,500 AEDs across WNY and beyond. This project was done in collaboration with a University at Buffalo pilot program, the Buffalo Bills, Cardiac Crusade, and our Health and Wellness teachers. In school, students were taught about sudden cardiac arrest, resuscitation, and the importance of knowing locations of AEDs. They were then challenged to go in to the community and find as many AEDs as possible, while documenting their locations. Student winners were recognized with Buffalo Bills gear for achievements such as best documentation, and the furthest AED found, which was in Thailand!
This initiative, led by Dr. Leslie Bisson, is part of a growing effort to save lives by helping community quickly locate AEDs in a time of need. Dr. Bisson is the medical director for the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres. He was also a member of the team that provided on field care for Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin when he suffered cardiac arrest on the football field in 2023. This work is connected to a national effort aimed at saving lives by mapping the precise locations of AEDs, which can assist someone in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest.
