OKTOBERFEST. Hello all! Good news. OGSGS is planning an in-person meeting on the afternoon of October 11 in Orangeburg. This will include our annual meeting to elect a new board and update by-laws as well as presentations that should interest everyone with Orangeburg ancestry. Furthermore, the meeting will be FREE for the first time, to ensure that everyone who is interested can attend.
We will introduce the exciting new professionally-developed OGSGS website that will make updating and expanding the information that we give you much easier.
There also will be a presentation by Lynn Teague on the role of the Presbyterian Church in the early Orangeburgh faith community, and the decidedly non-theological reason that the parish later converted to Church of England. This will include information on the use of the Joop Giessendanner transcription of the parish records that are an indispensable part of our work to reconstruct our family histories.
There will be a presentation on the great information that we can obtain from archived newspapers and how to access it, from reporter (and OGSGS board member) Martha Rose Brown.
And, there will be a presentation on the history of the Pendarvis family, among the earliest and most interesting of the non-Swiss settlers of the township. (You know they must be interesting when PBS has a webpage on them, but that source is unfortunately inaccurate in important details.) This is the joint effort of longtime Pendarvis researcher Randy Floyd and Lynn Teague.
Finally, there will be a chance to mingle with the OGSGS board and other members to enjoy snacks and talk about common interests.
More information will be forthcoming soon! Plan to be there!
