Cross posted from the OrangetownPoliceDept Twitter Account:

As the weather gets warmer, more residents are enjoying electric bicycles (e-bikes) throughout our community. e-bikes can be a fun way to exercise, and enjoy the outdoors.

The Orangetown Police Department is sharing some helpful information regarding New York State e-bike / e-scooter laws. We have also included safety tips to help be safe while sharing the roadways, sidewalks, and trails together. This information is not all encompassing. With any laws, it is the responsibility of every e-bike / e-scooter operator to know and obey the traffic laws and local regulations that govern where and how they ride.

🚲 New York State e-bike and e-scooter Basics
• Riders must be at least 16 years old to operate an e-bike or e-scooter
• E-bikes must follow the same traffic laws as traditional bicycles, including obeying traffic signals, signs, and are prohibited from riding on sidewalks.

Local municipalities may have additional rules regarding where e-bikes and e-scooters may operate.

⚠️ Safety Matters
E-bikes can travel faster and accelerate more quickly than traditional bicycles. Because of this, riders should use extra caution, especially in areas with vehicle traffic, pedestrians, children, or areas with limited visibility.

Helpful safety reminders:
• Wear a properly fitted helmet every ride
• Slow down in crowded areas
• Avoid distracted riding (phones/headphones/etc.)
• Use lights and reflective gear
• Ride predictably and be visible to motorists
