9.1.26- Please be advised that today, September 1st 2026, a construction company has damaged a water service line on School Street that caused us to have to isolate the water main on the street for them to make the repair. The activation of these valves will have created some water discoloration in the surrounding areas that we hope will clear quickly. Thank you for your patience and understanding for this unexpected event

Ahh AI scanner apps… This is an article that features local chiefs, well, our police Chief at least, pertaining to Police calls.
These apps also reports fire and EMS incidents and are not accurate nor dependable.
Significant and noteworthy incidents we report directly, from us, first hand and no AI. If you see a fire or EMS incident on these scanner apps, keep in mind the source it comes from- we do our best to keep the public informed when appropriate.

Law enforcement officials warn against relying on AI scanner apps after false reports cause confusion.

Our call members aren’t TECHNICALLY volunteers, but they’re still the men and women being honored today. They have other jobs and careers, families at home and still respond to calls to help this community. They are held to high training standards before and during their time on the department. The department wouldn’t be where it was and couldn’t respond when we’re needed without them. Thanks to all!
We can’t forget the call and volunteer departments around us either! We are so thankful to them

From the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services :
Firefighters answer a calling that too often brings them into the center of tragedy. Some of these events -- whether they involve strangers, family members, or fellow firefighters -- can be hard to shake. It's ok to talk about PTSD, moral injury, and other mental health and wellness issues. Massachusetts CISM and peer support contacts are available at https://bit.ly/4bUETKo, or call or text 988 to reach the Su***de and Crisis Lifeline.

Shoutout to our community.
On the afternoon of 8.13.26 we had a serious incident(press release below) and we want to highlight how bystanders from our community helped out. A motor vehicle struck a utility pole on East Main St in front of WalMart. Bystanders immediately sprung into action to render care for the driver until responders arrived. Another civilian, upon request by fire personnel, directed traffic for us for almost 30min, protecting responders from passing traffic . Many others offered assistance. We love our community and appreciate people stepping up to help out. It was a hectic scene and we apologize for not getting names, but you know what you did and we thank you!!
Incident details:
8.13.26- At approx 3:36pm, While our four on duty members were committed to two separate medicals with both ambulances which also tied up Orange Police, Shelburne Control Dispatch toned our dept for a Motor Vehicle vs Utility Pole, with an unresponsive driver and vehicle smoking. An On-Call Captain happened to be at the FD when the tone went out and immediately responded with Engine 2 and confirmed Athol Fire Department was enroute mutual aid with an ambulance.
Upon arrival, a motor vehicle was into a pole, operator still in the car and bystanders had initiated CPR. A medical helicopter was immediately requested and with the help of bystanders, the operator was removed from the vehicle and CPR continued and AED utilized. Traffic was still attempting to pass by and was too close to the incident, a bystander was requested to divert traffic through the Walmart entrance which he did without hesitation. One Orange PD officer was able to free up from a previous incident and arrived on scene to assist with life saving efforts. Additional on-call FFs then arrived to assist.
Athol Fire Department arrived with an Engine and Ambulance to provide transport to Athol Hospital. Ultimately there were no medical helicopters available for various reasons. There is currently no further information available at the time of this posting.
We would like to again, thank the two bystanders that jumped in to help with immediate CPR, along with those that helped with extrication, and the gentlemen who committed to directing traffic. Sometimes we just don’t have enough help- no one overstepped, everyone stepped up and no one complained . Thank you to our community for the assist.
Very special thank you to Shelburne Control Dispatchers for organizing the response as well as the rest of the busy county activity.
