Orange promotes 5 police sergeants to lieutenant and renews 5 special police officers

In a ceremony today at City Hall at noon, Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr. promoted 5 police sergeants to lieutenant and swore in 5 special police officers. The promoted sergeants had been demoted in January as part of police layoffs. As a result on concessions negotiated with the Police Superior Officers Association, the city now has the funds to re-promote them. The five promoted sergeants are Judith Rothenberger, Michael Piserchio, Michael Juliano, William Gumbars and Shawn Harris. The 5 special police officers are Michael J. Crowley, Christopher Dottino, Richard Forrester, Lonnie Henderson and Denzal McClutcher. Special officers are used in the Municipal Court and on Main Street. They must be sworn in annually. Statement by Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr.: “The promotions will not have any impact on the Orange budget. They are being paid for with funds made possible by work rule changes negotiated with the union. Orange will continue to have no tax increase this year. Today’s ceremonies follow the creation of a street crime unit, the rehiring of all of our laid office police still available for employment, the rehiring of 12 laid off firefighters, the hiring of 12 more and the deployment of new police technology; all giant steps toward making the people of Orange safer without increasing spending or impacting property taxpayers.”

Other counties that have created temporary jobs using the National Emergency Grant include Morris, Union, Passaic and Bergen counties. Orange to hold its first farmers’ market, Wednesday, October 12th, 1pm-5pm

Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr. announced today that Orange will hold its first Farmers Market on Wednesday, October 12th in the rear of City Hall, 29 North Day Street. The market is in partnership with the New Jersey Seniors Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP). However, all residents are invited to attend and shop.

One of the participants in the farm market will be Garden State Urban Farms of Orange (GSUF). GSUF collaborates with schools, nonprofit organizations and government groups to provide employment opportunities and educational programming as well as low-cost, healthy food. GSUF operates a hydroponic greenhouse in Orange, NJ. They train ex-offenders and at risk youth in managing a sustainable business, while growing the highest quality greens for the local community.

The New Jersey Seniors Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program provides locally grown unprepared fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs to eligible seniors 60 years of age and older. The program is administered by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, Essex County Division on Aging and City of Orange. Local farmers are recruited and trained to be Certified Farmer Vendors. These farmers benefit from the programs by directly marketing their locally grown fresh produce to eligible participants at farmers market across the state.

The market accepts Senior Nutrition Vouchers. Vouchers will be distributed to all qualified seniors who did not receive on for the year. Each eligible participant receives four $5 checks/vouchers that can be redeemed for fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs at the farmers market.

Statement by Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr.
“Farmers’ Markets are a wonderful way for people to buy fresh produce direct from the farm. Orange is delighted to hold our first farmers’ Market and we hope to hold additional markets in the future. This event is not just for seniors. I invite all Orange residents to come by and enjoy the afternoon.”

There were rides, games, local entertainment and venders selling food and various products. Approximately 2500 people attended over the two days. The Festival was founded by businesswoman and Former Council President Maria Vandermeer in 2002. This year’s event was sponsored by the Orange American Italian Organization. Andy Farro, President, Maria Vandermeer, Vice President and Lucy Di Iura, event coordinator. Live music was provided by the band, The Jersey Sound. In the area of Lincoln & Mechanic, a renaissance of architecture and restaurants is emerging including Cafe Sport, Café Roma and Just Like Nonna’s. Church feasts and festivals continue as they have in the past. Italian/Americans and those of every ethnic group continue to flock to the church feasts & festivals. Text of Mayor’s Proclamation: Whereas, Paul Ippolito, IV, was born in the City of Orange Township on April 29, 1969 to Paul Ippolito, III and JoAnn Piserchio; and Whereas, Paul Ippolito, IV, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Seton Hall University; and Whereas, Paul Ippolito, IV, graduated from the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in 1992; and Whereas, Paul Ippolito, IV, in keeping with his family tradition is serving as the current Owner of the Ippolito Memorial Funeral Home in the City of Orange Township; and Whereas, Paul Ippolito, IV, is the past President and current member of the Orange/West Orange Chapter of Unico National, a non-profit organization that promotes the enhancement of the image of Italian Americans and for the members to be of service to the community; and Whereas, the Paul Ippolito Memorial Funeral Home and family have been a part of the City of Orange Township community since it was established in 1917; and NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr., and the Municipal Council of the City of Orange Township, New Jersey, hereby recognizes Paul Ippolito, IV, as the Man of the Year, for his stellar service and outstanding commitment to the City of Orange Township, and the Italian Community.
