Safety Saturday • Did you know?

Turnouts are the protective coat and pants firefighters wear during fires and other hazardous incidents. Their multiple layers help protect against heat, flames, moisture, cuts and abrasions.

One set of turnouts costs approximately $4,073, and Orange City Fire completes 233 turnout inspections annually.

During an incident, smoke, soot and other harmful contaminants can collect on the gear. Exposed turnouts must be properly cleaned, thoroughly dried and carefully inspected before returning to service. This helps reduce continued exposure while ensuring the gear remains ready to protect its wearer.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies occupational exposure as a firefighter as carcinogenic to humans. That is why cleaning turnout gear is about much more than appearance. It is an important part of protecting the long-term health and safety of our firefighters.

Once a Panther, always a Panther!

We had a great time hanging out with the students at Orange High School for Career Day, sharing a little about what it takes to become a firefighter and what makes this career so special!

And here’s a fun fact: We have a few Orange High graduates serving right here at the Orange City Fire Department! From walking the halls of Orange High to protecting the community they grew up in, it’s pretty cool to see things come full circle.

Sometimes, all it takes is a letter from a fourth grader to make for a pretty special day!

When a Serrano Elementary School student wrote to us, he shared two things: he wants to be a firefighter when he grows up, and with College Shirt Day every Wednesday at his school, he was hoping to get an Orange City Fire shirt to wear proudly.

And we have to give him credit for some pretty impressive penmanship, too!

Well, we couldn’t just drop a shirt in the mail!

Our Station 2 crew made a special delivery, arriving in style with T2, a little show and tell, and a classroom full of excited fourth graders.

What started with one handwritten letter turned into a memorable visit for the entire class and one very happy future firefighter.

We love opportunities like this to connect with the next generation of firefighters.

On October 13, 2026, the Orange City Fire Department, in partnership with the Orange County Fire Chiefs Association and Orange County Fire Services Association, had the honor of hosting the annual Orange County Fire Services Memorial.

Each year, this solemn tradition brings together fire service personnel, families, and loved ones from across Orange County to honor and remember those who dedicated their lives to serving others.

This year, Orange City Fire paid special tribute to three members of our fire family: Firefighter John Penley, Battalion Chief Scott Conniff, and Fire Captain John Jordan. Their service, dedication, and contributions to our community will never be forgotten.

A meaningful part of the ceremony is the reaffirmation of the Oath of Office by uniformed personnel, a tradition encouraged by the late Monsignor John Francis Sammon. It serves as a reminder of the commitment and brotherhood that unite the fire service.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Orange County fire agencies that participated, along with Santa Ana College Fire Technology Program Class 190, the Orange County Fire Authority and Huntington Beach Fire Department Pipes and Drums, and the Honor Guards from Anaheim Fire & Rescue, Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue, Huntington Beach Fire Dept., and OCFA.

A special thank you to OCFA for its continued partnership and support in providing audiovisual services, photography, and livestream coverage.

As we remember those we have lost, we are also reminded of the importance of supporting those who continue to serve. Mental health remains an essential conversation within the fire service. Our Peer Support Program is available to current and retired members and their families because no one in our fire family should face life’s challenges alone.

To the families of those we honored, thank you for allowing us to remember your loved ones and their lasting contributions to the fire service. Their service is remembered. Their sacrifice is honored. Their legacy lives on.

Norte Fire Update | October 17, 2026

Firefighters worked throughout the night to battle the Norte Fire in San Clemente, strengthening containment lines and continuing suppression efforts.

As of this morning, the fire remains at 570 acres and has reached 5% containment.

Six homes have been reported damaged or destroyed, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Orange City Fire personnel remain on scene, assisting with ongoing firefighting operations. While our crews support this incident, Orange City Fire remains fully staffed and prepared to respond to emergencies within our city.

Crews will continue working throughout the day to increase containment and allow evacuated residents to return home as soon as conditions are safe.

As Southern California experiences a significant wind event and increased wildfire danger, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, Cal OES, has prepositioned firefighting resources throughout the region.

Orange City Fire Department’s OES Engine 1315 has been deployed to a prepositioning assignment here in Orange County, ensuring additional resources are available for a rapid response to potential wildfires in our local area.

The Orange City Fire Department remains fully staffed and ready to respond to emergencies within our community.

Weather Alert | Santa Ana Winds & Heat Advisories

The National Weather Service has issued Wind and Heat Advisories for Orange and surrounding inland Orange County communities through Saturday, October 17.

Santa Ana conditions are expected to bring strong northeast winds, elevated temperatures, and dry conditions to the area. Wind gusts of 35 to 55 mph are possible, with the strongest winds expected near the foothills.

These conditions may result in falling tree limbs, blowing debris, power outages, and increased fire danger.

Orange City Fire reminds residents to take a few precautions:

• Secure loose outdoor furniture and other items.

• Use extra caution while driving, especially in high-profile vehicles.

• Stay hydrated and limit strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat.

• Check on elderly neighbors and those vulnerable to heat.

• Avoid activities that could create sparks or ignite vegetation.

Fire prevention, school visits, and a whole lot of fun!

It’s always a good time to talk fire safety!

That’s a wrap on Fire Prevention Week! Our crews had a great time visiting Linda Vista, Taft Elementary School, California iInspire Academy, and West Orange Elementary School, sharing important fire safety lessons with our youngest community members.

This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety,” focused on safe charging habits and lithium-ion battery safety.

Thank you to all the students and staff who welcomed us! We love getting out into our community, and making fire safety education fun is always time well spent!

On October 13, 2026, fire service agencies from across Orange County came together for the 2026 Orange County Fire Service Memorial to honor and remember those who dedicated their lives to serving our communities.

We are proud to stand alongside our fire service family in preserving the traditions of remembrance, respect, and service.

Thank you to the Orange County Fire Authority for capturing this meaningful ceremony.
