Law Enforcement Officers from across Virginia gathered at the Robert H. Smith Center for the Constitution for the "Constitutional Foundations of Law Enforcement" Seminar. Chief Tim Longo Sr. used his over four decades of experience to challenge the officers to consider the Constitution and Bill of Rights not as something that limits their actions, but as upholding values that are worth risking their lives for.

Professor Henry L. Chambers Jr., Univ. of Richmond School of Law, used recent cases to explore the principles and values in our Constitution as they relate to Officers making instantaneous decisions on a daily basis. The officers left inspired and energized to serve their communities by the contradictions and power of studying and reflecting on the grounds of Montpelier.

The dialogue and tough discussions about the essential, and sometimes competing, values in our 1st Amendment fostered rich discussion and debate. The attendees grappled with free speech cases from colonial times in New York to a comparison of current government prosecutions of speech in Germany and left with increased inspiration for civic engagement.
