Join our team of nature enthusiasts on a half mile walk along the Biosphere 2 grounds on the Birding Nature Tour. During this tour you will have the opportunity to observe both native and migratory bird species. The route includes some uneven terrain and slight elevation changes. While our primary focus is on the birds, we will also explore the unique geology of the Santa Catalina foothills and identify some of the native plants that provide food and shelter for our local wildlife.

The hibiscus are in bloom in the rainforest! These hardy and sun loving shrubs are thriving in the windows of the rainforest biome in Biosphere 2. Since the Biosphere 2 rainforest is a very humid biome there is usually no problem with keeping the soil damp which these shrubs love. We love seeing these beautiful blooms all year round.

We recently had a Landscape Evolution Observatory surface harvest. On this day they collected soil, moss and top crust from the LEO bay this helps us create a catalog of what is happening on the LEO bay over time. The LEO Bay allows us to gain more understanding into soil, air, and water which may not appear dynamic, but they are constantly evolving. With the LEO Bays, we can study how water moves, how microbes grow, and how nutrients shift within these vital areas.

The nudibranchs are back in shallow waters! We’ve been spotting the nudibranch on the shores of the Biosphere 2 beach. While they were close we added some to the coral tank in the kitchen of Biosphere 2 hoping our visitors will enjoy seeing them as much as we do. Nudibranch are sea slugs that consume aiptasia, a sea anemone. In the picture above there is a clump of nudibranch next to aiptasia.

The Egyptian thorn is a tree native to Africa and the Middle East but can be found in the Savanna biomes of Biosphere 2. It is valued for its durable lumber, firewood, and its use in producing adhesives and certain traditional medicines. The tree thrives in full sun and plays an important ecological role its nitrogen fixing roots enrich the soil, improving fertility for surrounding plants. From summer through winter, the Egyptian thorn produces distinctive puffball like yellow flowers, making it easy to identify in its natural habitat.

Had some white tailed deer come visit Biosphere 2! During the summer we get a sizable herd of deer that come and visit the Biosphere 2 grounds because we have delicious grass and a water source. The fawning season for white tail deer is from July through September aligning with the monsoon season. They like to visit in the afternoon.

Enjoying the view from the lower Savanna and hoping for a papaya harvest soon. The lower savanna is made up of many edible species ranging from papaya to rosemary with plenty of other species between. Our savanna biome was designed to be scaled down version of tropical savanna showcasing the mix of biodiversity that naturally occurs and the beauty of the plants themselves.

Come take a stroll through the Orchard at Biosphere 2! The Biosperians used to call the orchard the sweet shop. This is where they grew all their treats. We still have many of those “sweets” still growing here today in our orchard. We have figs, guava, bananas, coffee, lemons, limes, and grapefruit. Since the Biospherians couldn’t bring in candy they had to rely on sweet and sour fruit for their candy cravings.
