Hello Opelousas,

Another beautiful day and another great event at Donald Gardner Stadium Track and Field. I want to thank the organizers of the St. Landry Parish School Board Mental Health Awareness Community Event, Walk a Mile in My Shoes, for bringing our community together around such an important cause.

Thank you to all the participants who showed up in support of mental health. I also want to recognize the Divine Nine sororities and fraternities, our local businesses, and our city partners who helped make this event both successful and informative.

A special thank you to our Parks and Recreation staff for their continued support and hard work behind the scenes.

Let’s continue to come together as a community and support causes that make a difference for the people we serve.

Statement from Mayor Julius Alsandor

Today is a proud and historic day for the City of Opelousas.
The City of Opelousas Water System has officially received an A water grade from the Louisiana Department of Health, earning a score of 91 out of 100 for 2025. This is a major improvement from the City’s former D rating, which had been in place since 2022. The 2025 report also shows that the City met key requirements in federal water quality, financial sustainability, operations and maintenance, infrastructure, and other areas reviewed by the state.
This achievement represents years of hard work, accountability, and commitment. Since 2022, our administration has worked closely with the Compliance Agent to address deficiencies at the water plant and reservoir. Significant improvements have been made to our water plant, and the Administrative Order issued by the State of Louisiana in 2018 concerning the water grade has now been lifted.

Water system grades evaluate a community water system’s long-term ability to provide safe drinking water to residents. The Louisiana Department of Health reviews several categories, including federal water quality, state violations, financial sustainability, operations and maintenance, infrastructure, customer satisfaction, and secondary contaminants. Meeting the requirements for an A grade is not easy, and I want our residents to understand that this is a tremendous accomplishment for our city.

I am extremely proud of the hard work of our administration, our Water Department, and our facilities staff. Their dedication, long hours, and steady focus helped the City of Opelousas reach this milestone ahead of the timeline that was originally projected.

I am also humbled by the congratulations and support we have received from fellow mayors throughout the state. This moment belongs to the people of Opelousas. It shows what can happen when we stay focused, work together, and continue investing in the future of our city.

There is still a lot of work to be done to improve the water system, and we are continuing to make improvements to improve and strengthen our water system for generations to come. Some of the remaining improvements include upgrades to the water treatment facility, replacement of problematic galvanized steel water mains and services, and replacement of several water mains currently out of service, to name a few. But today, we celebrate progress and the men and women who helped make this possible. And today, we celebrate Opelousas.

🚧 Traffic Advisory – Vine Street 🚧

City of Opelousas Water and Street crews will be conducting immediate repairs this morning at the intersection of Wartelle Street and Vine Street, near Guaranty Glass.

The right lane of Highway 190 heading east, between Veazie Street and Wartelle Street, will be temporarily closed. Traffic will be reduced to one lane while repairs are underway. An arrow board and police unit will be on site to assist with traffic flow.

Please be mindful of work crews, expect delays, and drive cautiously through the area.

Thank you for your patience as we complete these necessary repairs.

Hello Opelousas,

Thank you for the many wonderful memories from Opelousas Love Fest 2K26. It was a tremendous turnout with great food, outstanding entertainment, and beautiful weather that truly made the day special.

A big congratulations to the Love Fest Committee, along with all the sponsors and vendors, for putting together such an enjoyable and successful event. I also want to recognize our Parks Superintendent and his entire staff for preparing North Park and making sure everything was ready for our community.

Thank you to all of our security partners, including the Opelousas Police Department, St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Marshal’s Office, for helping ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone who attended.

And most importantly, thank you to the citizens of Opelousas. Events like this are only successful because of you. When we come together as a community, we see what is possible.

Nothing but love, Opelousas.

It was an honor to present the **Key to the City of Opelousas to our own Claire Babineaux Fontenot, CEO of Feeding America, the largest charitable organization in the United States.

Claire has never forgotten where she comes from and continues to make an impact right here at home. Through her work creating a partnership with Second Harvest of Acadiana and the Rural Accelerator program, she is helping address food insecurity in St. Landry Parish and beyond.

Thank you to Ginger LeCompte, St. Landry Evangeline United Way, and Women United for the invitation, and congratulations on hosting a wonderful and meaningful event.

Opelousas is proud of you, Claire.

The City of Opelousas would like to inform residents and businesses that water service is anticipated to be interrupted this afternoon along Grolee Street, beginning at the intersection of Raymond Street and extending west.

Areas expected to be impacted include:
Grolee & Hibiscus
Grolee & Oleander Street
LeDoux Circle

🛑Traffic Advisory:
Grolee Street is currently closed in front of the Grolee Elementary school circle. Tomorrow morning, access will be limited to school traffic only. All other through traffic is strongly encouraged to avoid the area.

This interruption is necessary to complete immediate infrastructure repairs. Work crews are currently on site and actively working to resolve the issue as quickly and safely as possible.

Once repairs are completed and water service is restored, all affected areas will be placed under a boil advisory as a precautionary measure. Additional guidance will be provided once the advisory is lifted.

The City of Opelousas appreciates the public’s patience and understanding as we work to address these urgent repairs and maintain the integrity of the city’s water system.
For more information, please contact the City of Opelousas at 337-948-2520.
