Fatal Crash Occurred on 2nd Avenue

A Columbus man has died following a vehicle crash in Opelika on Friday, September 4, 2026.
At approximately 2:12 p.m., an Opelika Police Officer traveling on 2nd Avenue witnessed a vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and an SUV. The 66-year-old driver of the motorcycle was found unresponsive in the grass near the roadway. Medics rendered aid before transporting him to East Alabama Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
The driver and passenger of the SUV remained on scene and were treated for minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by the Opelika Police Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit.

First responders are on the scene of a vehicle crash involving a motorcycle on 2nd Avenue near 3rd Street. Traffic is being rerouted off 2nd Avenue at 4th Street and 3rd Street. Please use caution or take an alternate route.

Teen Arrested on Additional Charges

The Opelika Police Department has arrested 18-year-old Jacob Scott Howell on additional charges, following an ongoing criminal investigation.
On Monday, August 31, 2026, Howell was arrested for Making a Terrorist Threat, First-Degree, following an investigation into a planned violent attack against Opelika High School. Howell posted bond and was released from the Lee County Jail later that afternoon.
During the course of the investigation, detectives discovered child po*******hy on Howell’s electronic devices. On Thursday, September 3, Howell was arrested on 15 counts of Possession of Child Po*******hy.
A bond hearing is scheduled for Friday, September 4, 2026.
Additionally, Howell is now banned from all school campuses in the state of Alabama.

Jacob Howell Arrested for Making Terroristic Threat

On Monday, August 31, 2026, the Opelika Police Department arrested 18-year-old Jacob Scott Howell of Opelika, AL, charging him with Making a Terrorist Threat, First-Degree, following an investigation into a planned violent attack against Opelika High School.
The initial report was received by Opelika Police School Resource Officers on Friday, August 28, 2026, after school had been released, indicating that Howell had developed a plan to attack the high school. School Resource Officers immediately notified Opelika City Schools leadership. Howell, who was not present at school today, has since been banned from all Opelika City Schools properties.
Through their investigation, Opelika Police Detectives established probable cause to take Howell into custody on Monday.
The department reminds all community members to remain vigilant: if you see or hear anything suspicious, report it immediately to law enforcement.

Walter Randolph Arrest

The Opelika Police Department was notified of a possible s*x offender residing in the 500 Block of Antioch Circle, which has led to the arrest of 41-year-old Walter L. Randolph. Randolph was charged with failure to register as an adult s*x offender with local law enforcement and adult s*x offender in a prohibited residence location. During the course of the investigation, officers determined that Randolph had failed to comply with required S*x Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) requirements and was residing at a location within the prohibited 2000 feet distance of a school, daycare, or resident camp facility. On August 27th , 2026, Randolph was taken into custody without incident. He is currently being held at the Lee County Jail. The Opelika Police Department remains committed to enforcing s*x offender registration laws designed to protect children and ensure compliance with court-ordered requirements.
