What a fascinating presentation we heard on the Black Bear Project, an exciting research program studying the black Bear population in the state of Alabama. And yes, we not only have black bears in the northeastern part of the state, but also in the southern part of the state. No need to be surprised if you see a black bear in the Mobile area! Cristian Hernandez, a graduate student in Wildlife Ecology at AU shared the research he has done studying black bears. Attending with him was Dr. Steve Ditchkoff, Ireland Professor of Wildlife Sciences in the College of Forestry, Wildlife & Environment. To the left of these two gentlemen is Rotary host, Dr. Dick Brinker, Emeritus Dean of Forestry, Wildlife & Environment at AU.

At the last meeting of the Auburn Rotary club, May 27, we heard a great presentation by Andy Robinson, a motivational speaker who shared the courageous story of Coach Jeremy Williams from Georgia. Coach Williams was diagnosed with ALS, but continued coaching a very successful high school football team. Coach Williams went on to be awarded the national high school coach of the year. The story is told in a book called “Tenacious” which can be found on Amazon. Mr. Robinson‘s purpose is to continue to spread the story of Jeremy Williams’ life, grounded in his faith in Christ and a very strong love of family. Those pictured below include members of our club, including President Brenda Hellums and President-elect Danny Speigner.

District 6880, which is our district, is holding its annual conference this weekend in Opelika, at the Marriott/Grand National. We have been so fortunate to have Bob Cochran as our district governor, who began his Rotary career in the Auburn Rotary Club and is now a leader in the Lee County Sunrise Rotary Club, also in Auburn. Bob finishes his successful term as district governor this weekend. Two of the primary sponsors of the conference are Servis1st Bank and Kassouf CPAs & Advisors, both with members of the Auburn Rotary Club - THANK YOU! Also a big thanks to the three clubs in our area who were also sponsors: the Auburn Rotary Club, the Lee County Sunrise Rotary Club and the Opelika Rotary Club.

Today our club visited the new Nonprofit Center of East Alabama, and we were welcomed by its director Race Cannon. The purpose of the center is to strengthen nonprofits through education, resources, and affordable space. The center is made possible due to the Samford-Cannon Foundation, founded by a very giving family of which Race is a part. Race spoke to our club and gave us a tour of the facility. Lee County is fortunate to have this center!

Our club was happy to welcome Kevin Messer, CEO and Executive Director of Abel Ministries as our weekly speaker. Mr. Messer spoke of the many programs his organization sponsors for men to transition successfully from destructive or addictive situations to positive outcomes. They also provide employment opportunities to their program graduates and encourage them to get connected with a local church.
