September 11th will always be a day we remember with heavy hearts. On this day we lift up continued prayers for those affected and pause to honor and remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the heroes who showed incredible courage and sacrifice. 💕 We will never forget.

In Defense of Democracy...

Democracy doesn't defend itself. We, the people, do.

Today, we filed an amicus brief at the U.S. Supreme Court to defend mail-in voting and protect the millions of Americans who rely on it, especially Black voters and marginalized communities who have historically faced barriers to the ballot box.

Mail-in voting is safe, secure, and essential. We will not stand by while voter suppression tactics threaten our right to vote.

Getting Out The Vote is (GOTV) is especially important in Smiths Station, Alabama because local elections often have a direct impact on the issues residents deal with every day, and in smaller communities, a relatively small number of votes can make a significant difference. Smiths Station City of Smiths Station has a population of roughly 5,500 residents. Small populations like this makes individual voter participation that much more INFLUENTIAL and IMPERATIVE than it might be in a larger city.

The meeting last night was powerful and the history in our community is inspiring. However, community erasure, community erosion, and community displacement are real, and it is happening every single day in marginalized and underserved communities in larger and more progressive smaller cities, like ours.

Therefore, we cannot continue to live only for ourselves.

Lee County, AL NAACP Branch 5038 is happy to share that the speaker for the Freedom Fund dinner for the STATE CONFERENCE, which will be held right here in Lee County, will be Jeffrey Alan Peck, the great-grandson of Dr. W. E. B. Du Bois and one of the founders of the NAACP.

Jeffrey continues Dr. Du Bois’ legacy by engaging in socio-political discourse, and by working closely with non-profit organizations that are involved in racial justice, equity, and empowerment. Jeffrey is also a Houston native, who aspires to increase awareness and affinity for Dr. Du Bois throughout the South and within ignored black communities.
