Blount County Conservation District

Blount County Conservation District "Working to conserve our natural resources so future generations can enjoy the same Blount County and Alabama the Beautiful we know and love."

For nearly 80 years, Blount County Conservation District has committed to conserving Blount's natural resources by connecting those who use and work the land to the education, technical know-how, and resources they need. This stewardship revived the landscape from the devastation of the 1930's and continues to improve quality of life for all Alabama citizens. The Blount County Conservation Distric

t is part of a statewide movement in the conservation of Alabama's natural resources: Conserve Alabama. Conserve Alabama is an initiative of the State of Alabama Soil and Water Conservation Committee to re-energize and unite stakeholders in the effort to be good stewards of our land and water. With growing population and increased demand of resources in the 21st Century, it's more important than ever that we use our resources wisely. Join us to Conserve Alabama!

As drought conditions worsen, Alabama farmers are encouraged to use the Condition Monitoring Observer Reports on Drought system to note dry weatherโ€™s impact on their operations.

Several federal programs for financial assistance are tied to this drought monitor. Individual records ensure accurate information is reported to help farmers across the U.S.

The map below shows current reports as of Aug. 29.

THE GREAT ALABAMA TICK SURVEY
University of South Alabama

Alabama has experienced an increased incidence of tick-borne diseases affecting humans (ADPH 2017). Presently, the only state-wide tick surveillance program is based at the University of South Alabama. Given the size of Alabama, limited resources, and the potential importance of tick-borne diseases in the state, I am asking the public for help. All it takes is to send in any ticks found on a person (or pets) while outside. Sending is easy, just tape (Scotch tape is best) the tick(s) to a piece of paper, put it in a sealed envelope and send it to Dr. John McCreadie at the University of South Alabama (mailing address below). Submitted ticks will be identified to species and this information passed along to the person submitting the specimen. The only information needed about the tick is the location where the tick was found and date when the tick was found. Please also include an email address to receive the information about the identification of the species.

Thank you for your assistance!

Fall armyworms are back for their annual visit, and they're not planning on leaving until the first frost. These pesky critters might munch away at your fields, but don't worry, they rarely kill healthy grass stands.

Curious about a battle plan? We have the scoop on the products Alabama producers can use to fend off these invaders. Read about how these products work, their residual levels, and any grazing/harvesting rules that you need to know at https://www.aces.edu/blog/topics/farming/insecticides-for-pasture-control-of-fall-armyworms/!
