Last week the Oneida Indian Nation was proud to host teachers and staff from Madison-Oneida BOCES for a special day of education and training on the Oneida Indian Nation’s role as America’s First Allies and the founding of the United States. The group began the day with a presentation at the Nation’s Mary C. Winder Community Center by General Manager Nichola Aregano Diaz (Turtle Clan) and Special Events Coordinator Ron Cogan (Turtle Clan) and sampling of traditional style foods including corn mush, fry bread and strawberry drink.

The group also visited Shako:wi Cultural Center, Fort Stanwix National Monument and the Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site.

On the evening of August 6, Oneida Indian Nation Members and their families, representatives of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, elected officials, veterans and community residents from across the region gathered at the Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site to commemorate the 249th anniversary of one of the key battles of the Revolutionary War. It was at the Battle of Oriskany where the Oneida first fought alongside their American friends in their fight for freedom. Although there was no clear victor that day in 1777, the outcome prevented British forces from capturing nearby Fort Stanwix, helping secure future American victories at Saratoga.

During the event, Oneida Indian Nation Council member Jules Obomsawin (Wolf Clan) delivered remarks on behalf of the Nation, calling attention to the Oneida role in the founding of the United States that cemented the Nation’s legacy as America’s First Allies.

Each year, the Oneida Indian Nation joins with its neighbors to commemorate the sacrifices of our respective ancestors at the Battle of Oriskany on August 6, 1777. Because of their mutual steadfast commitment to sovereignty and independence, the United States of America was forged.

The annual Commemoration will take place on Thursday, August 6 at 7 p.m. at the Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site on Rte. 69 in Oriskany, NY.

Congratulations to Ray Fougnier (Wolf Clan) on being named the AAU Strength Sports' Overall Male Athlete of the Year for 2026!
At age 83, Ray has continued his record-breaking run, setting four more world records at the 2026 AAU North American Powerlifting Championships, and earning Male Best Overall Lifter honors. Ray has competed at the AAU North American, World and International Powerlifting Championships for more than a decade, setting new records every time he steps on the platform.

Beyond the platform, he continues to serve as an inspiration in his home community, recently headlining a "Powerlifting and Healthy Aging" event at the Mary C. Winder Community Center. Ray was also AAU Strength Sports' Overall Male Athlete of the Year in 2025.

Earlier this week, participants in the Oneida Indian Nation’s Elders Program teamed up with kids from the Nation’s Summer Jam program for a few lively rounds of intergenerational bingo! 🎉

The event gave Elders and youth a chance to spend time together and enjoy a game that spans generations. It’s a simple but meaningful way to strengthen connections across the community.

As part of America's 250th anniversary, the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian welcomed the Oneida Indian Nation to Washington, D.C., July 22, to present First Allies: Polly Cooper and the Oneida Indian Nation—a program honoring the Oneida ancestors who stood with the American colonists during the Revolutionary War and celebrating Polly Cooper's extraordinary legacy.

The event included Oneida social dances that welcomed attendees to join in.

Don’t’ miss the Fort Stanwix First Allies Craft Fair, happening Saturday, August 1, from 10 am to 5 pm at Fort Stanwix National Monument in Rome, NY.

Guests will find handcrafted beadwork, basketry, wampum work, leatherwork, cornhusk artistry, textiles, paintings, and other Indigenous artwork.

- Indian tacos, fry bread and homemade desserts available from Iroquois Eatery.

- Haudenosaunee social dance exhibitions featuring Chris Thomas and his Ongwe’hoñ:wehkah Dancers at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

- DIY Craft Booth where participants can make a Haudenosaunee inspired craft during the craft fair while supplies last.

- Free-to-attend.
