More info about Onamia:
Onamia, Minnesota is located at the junction of Highways 169 and 27, just south of Mille Lacs Lake on the shore of Lake Onamia. It’s proximity to the “Big Lake” and “Walleye Capitol of the World” makes it a gateway to Minnesota Vacationland and all it has to offer. Onamia received its name from Lake Onamia, which in Ojibwe means “dancing ground.” The dance symbolizes either petition or thanksgiving. The city of Onamia is located where early American Indians performed these dances. The city dates to 1908 when lumbering was a major industry in the Mille Lacs area, and the first trains reached the town. Today, Onamia is the area's largest city, housing the Mille Lacs Health System, light industry and over 50 businesses. A public library, Two city parks, a skate park, the Lions Fitness Center and tennis courts provide in-town recreation. Nearby Hardwoods at Mille Lacs Lake Resort and Marina, Higbees and Izatys offer beautiful and challenging golf courses. The Mille Lacs Health System Hospital and Clinic is ready to meet any medical need. Onamia.... small town...
