City of Omro Announces the Passing of Alderman Pete Hennes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Omro, Wis. (May 25, 2026): It is with sincere sorrow that the City of Omro announces the passing of Alderman Pete Hennes.

Pete served as an Alderman for the City of Omro from 2022 to 2026 and was actively involved in the Omro community for decades. He served with dedication, professionalism, and a strong commitment to public service. Pete was a U.S. Veteran, thoughtful leader, trusted colleague, and passionate advocate for the City and its residents. In addition to his Council service, Pete was an election official and was an active community volunteer. His contributions, leadership, and service to Omro will be remembered with gratitude.

“Pete cared deeply about the City of Omro and the people he served,” said Mayor Mary Berndt. “He was committed to doing what was best for the community, and he will be sincerely missed.”

The City extends its heartfelt condolences to Pete’s wife, Jill, his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. Additional information regarding funeral arrangements or memorial services will be shared by the family.

The Omro Common Council will discuss the aldermanic vacancy and consider acting on next steps at its regular meeting on June 2, 2026, at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Due to the impact of the Omro bridge lane closure, OES, OMS, and OHS will open at 7:00 a.m.
for parent drop-off beginning Wednesday, May 13, through the last day of school on Friday,
May 22. The drop off time has been adjusted to provide families additional time to navigate all
the potential detours due to the construction.

OES students may be dropped off at the OES main entrance and will report to the gym, where
they will be supervised by staff members.

Middle school and high school students should be dropped off in the middle school parking
lot. Middle school students will report to the OMS gym, and high school students will report to
the OHS cafeteria. All students will be supervised by staff members.

After discussions with Lamers, the Omro City Administrator, and the Police Department, we
have developed a plan to minimize major bus transportation disruptions. To reduce the time
students are spending on buses, the School District of Omro buses will be escorted by law
enforcement southbound over the HWY 21 bridge. There may still be minor delays to bus
pick-up and drop-off times.
