Remember when you were in school and the teacher required you to “ show your work” regardless of whether you had the right answer.

Well as you cast your vote, you will hear candidates say anything and promise everything to get your vote. They will offer up the right answer but make them “ show their work.”

For example if a candidate is talking about inclusion, equality, diversity look at their PAID campaign executive staff and see how many minorities are campaign managers, communication directors, leading the finance team. Also what are their hiring practices been like in the work place.

Press them on the specifics as to how they intend to implement the things they say to get your vote.

Vote wisely

It’s only been 57 years since the Voting Rights Act was signed into law allegedly removing barriers to Blacks’ exercising our right to vote.

Passage of the VRA did not come easy and many lost their lives and were subject to violence and intimidation over the 95 year struggle since the passage of the 15th Amendment to cast their vote. We owe it to them to not only register and vote, but to vote responsibly. Your vote should not be based on emotions, and campaign rhetoric. We have suffered enough from those who over promise and under deliver. Get to know for whom you are voting and why based on your research not what they say. Drill them on specifics as to how they will do what they say. Don’t fall for feeder issues. ( purposely tailored to attract Black voters)

Before you cast your vote on a candidate promising to address criminal system reform, ask yourself what has that person done to address the issues which contribute to criminal system involvement. Words can be deceiving; actions always tell the truth.

Tying the actions of Don Kleine for Douglas County Attorney our Douglas County Attorney to the State Parole Board shows not only how unqualified Dave Pantos for Douglas County Attorney is for the job, but shows how desperate he is to craft a message. It’s time we stop wasting our votes on who we think is the lesser of the evils. It’s ok to sit out some races. If you choose not to vote for Don, then you have even more reasons not to vote for Dave. He’s only saying what he thinks Black voters want to hear. Blacks Who Vote will have more to say on this.

Restoring the Voting Rights Act would slow down voter-suppression measures in the states. But Joe Manchin is wrong that Republicans won’t kill it too.
