Omaha's first of its kind outdoor fitness park () opened on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at Elmwood Park with an opening ceremony featuring community leaders and equipment demonstrations. The outdoor fitness park is situated adjacent to a playground, allowing parents and guardians the ability to supervise their children and workout at the same time. The fitness equipment is produced by TriActive Ameri

ca, an industry leader in outdoor fitness equipment.

“The vision for the park is to encourage and promote healthy, active lifestyles for all age groups and levels of fitness by creating a safe, fun and functional atmosphere within the community,” said Michaela Schenkelberg, a University of Nebraska Omaha May 2011 graduate and visionary behind the fitness park along with Professsors John Noble and David Corbin also with other UNO students. The project was made possible by Blue Cross, Blue Shield of Nebraska; the University of Nebraska Omaha; City of Omaha Parks and Recreation; and the Omaha Parks Foundation. Craig Larson, landscape architect of Olsson Associates designed the park, and Kiewit donated the cement and curbing for the park.
