Earlier today at approximately 9AM, TCSO was dispatch to assist firefighters with a car fire. The property in question was flagged as a caution due to prior violent criminal activity, prohibiting firefighters from responding alone.

Upon arrival, a lone TCSO deputy gave an individual orders to step away from the fire which were ignored. The suspect then charged at the deputy before producing a firearm. The deputy shot the suspect numerous times.

Once additional units arrived on scene, deputies and officers detained the suspect, removed a second firearm from him, and rendered medical aid by applying tourniquets.

The suspect was transported to the hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. No first responders or uninvolved persons were injured.

The deputy has been placed on standard administrative leave. The Region 3 Critical Incident Investigation Team will be conducting an independent investigation.

TCSO CORRECTIONS LIFESAVING AWARDS

Incident 1:

In February of this year, Corrections Deputies Davis, McPherson, and Rottman identified an inmate who was attempting to take their life with a telephone cord.

All three deputies intervened and began lifesaving measures until medical personnel could arrive. For their swift caretaking actions, all three deputies received the lifesaving award.

Incident 2:

In August of 2025, Corrections Deputy Arana responded to reports of an inmate choking. Deputy Arana located the choking inmate and successfully conducted the Heimlich maneuver, dislodging the food from the individuals esophagus and subsequently saving their life. For his swift caretaking actions, Deputy Arana received the lifesaving award.

Incident 3:

In February of this year, Corrections Deputies Searby and Morgan were conducting routine cell checks when they observed an inmate ripped a blanket up and was attempting to hang themselves with it. Deputy Searby lifted the inmate up to take tension off of their neck while Deputy Morgan untied the blanket. For their swift caretaking actions both deputies received the lifesaving award.

Incident 4:

In December of last year, Corrections Deputies Schaffer, Jacobsen, Arana, Boswell, and Keys were alerted to an inmate positioning to jump off the top of the stairs inside the max unit. All five deputies quickly intervened as a team, preventing the individual from jumping. For their swift caretaking actions, all five deputies received the lifesaving award/certificate of commendation.

For many, jail is the first step toward accountability within the criminal justice system and many individuals enter with or develop suicidal ideations as they navigate their court cases. All of the inmates involved in these incidents are offered treatment and evaluated by our partners with Olympic Health and Recovery Services.

Today, deputies responded to a burglary alarm at the Thurston County Family Courts. Upon arrival, they discovered broken glass and a male actively damaging property inside the building. Using effective de-escalation techniques, deputies were able to safely detain the individual without incident.

During the investigation, deputies also discovered that the American flag had been removed from the flagpole and placed inside a mailbox. After documenting the evidence, deputies promptly returned the flag to its rightful place so it could continue flying proudly over the Memorial Day weekend.

Please stay safe, and have a happy Memorial Day.

Thurston County Sheriff’s Office has officially moved!

Last week, we completed our move to our new facility located at 1111 Israel Rd SW, Tumwater WA 98501. We have resumed normal office hours and are ready to serve all of your TCSO needs under one roof. We will maintain a small office in the courthouse, but all services will now be rendered at our Tumwater location.

We still have a lot of unpacking to do with items like signage still in transit. As such, we will be hosting a public ribbon cutting ceremony in July to ensure the building is completely finished and staff have time to settle in. Stay tuned for a specific date and time!

TCSO VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARDS

At our recent award ceremony, two separate awards awards were handed out for our volunteers.

Ed Hildreth: recipient of the Kevin James Volunteerism in Action Award

Earlier this year, one of our Community Services Unit volunteers Kevin James passed away. Despite only being with our unit for 12 months, Kevin volunteered more than 400 hours to the citizens of Thurston County. At Kevin’s funeral, Sheriff Sanders announced the creation of this award to be given annually to the TCSO volunteer who donates the most volunteer hours.

For the first year of this award, CSU member Ed Hildreth is being recognized for his 382 hours of volunteerism. Congratulations Ed, you are a great reflection of Kevin and it was great having Kevin’s family present to see his legacy of service continue.

Cyndi Zechmann: Volunteer of the Year

Cyndi has volunteered with our office for over seven years, and since 2024, has served as a captain within the CSU unit. Since taking over that role, Cyndi has recruited six new volunteers and dedicated more than 500 hours to Thurston County. Cyndi’s commitment to volunteerism is a testament to her character.

Congratulations Cyndi.
