Thurston County Sheriff's Office K9 Unit

Thurston County Sheriff's Office K9 Unit Thurston County Sheriff's Office K9 Unit The primary duties of our Canine Teams are to track criminals who flee from law enforcement officers.

The Thurston County Sheriff's Office has a Canine Unit consisting of four K9 Deputies partnered with four German Shepherd and Malinois dogs. The four canine teams are all assigned to the Thurston County Sheriff's Office Patrol Division and all are assigned routine and general patrol functions; including answering general calls for service, but also have the capability and responsibility to deploy

to any scene in which those teams are needed. Our canine teams are all single discipline dogs trained in the tracking of human odor, finding discarded evidence or property, searching buildings and confined areas, as well as handler/deputy protection work. So when criminals run from our Deputies and Officers from surrounding police agencies within Thurston County, our Canine Teams are called and respond to locate the fleeing or hiding criminals. They do this by using their noses to smell a distinct odor of the person they are trying to find. All of us lose thousands of skin particles every second and the odor those particles emit are just as unique to a particular person as a fingerprint or DNA. Our German Shepherds detect that unique odor of a human being, and will track that person based on that unique smell to wherever that person flees. Our Canine Unit prides itself on being a “no cost program” to Thurston County and the tax payers, with the exception of the handler's salaries and their vehicles. Our handlers seek donations to make this program run completely on those donations in order to cover all of the costs associated with the canine programs and the care of our animals in these lean financial times. In this day and age of shrinking budgets, cost reduction and employee layoffs (including deputies), our canine handlers have solicited and raised donations to pay for all the costs associated with our program; to include equipment costs, training costs, upkeep and food for our canines. In fact, in these times where we are laying off deputies; if it were not for the donations of our public and local businesses, we would not have a canine program, as it would be one of the programs that would end up being cut in order to keep from losing more Patrol Deputies. Our canine units participate in several public education and demonstration events throughout the year and we all look forward to seeing you out there and introducing you to our teams. If you are interested in having a Canine Handler and their canine come to your event for a demonstration, please contact us. We appreciate any and all donations, including equipment. If you or your business is interested in donating to the Thurston County Canine Program, please call the Thurston County Sheriff's Office Canine Unit at (360) 786-5851 or donate using Paypal by clicking on the link provided on this page. Your donations are tax deductible as we are a 501(c)(3) through the Thurston County Deputy Sheriff's Foundation. You will receive a tax receipt upon your request for any monetary and/or equipment donations.

K9 Asher has been staying busy!

Tonight, Thurston County Deputies responded to a report of a protection order violation in the northeast part of the county. When deputies arrived, they located the suspect sitting in a vehicle in the driveway. As deputies attempted to contact him, the suspect fled the scene in the vehicle.

Deputies quickly deployed spike strips, but they did appear to be effective. A brief pursuit followed, lasting only a few blocks before the suspect crashed the vehicle and fled on foot.

Deputies did an excellent job establishing a perimeter and getting TCSO and Lacey PD drones in route, while K9 Asher was on the way. Once on scene, K9 Asher was deployed and began tracking. The track led deputies to a nearby property where the suspect was located hiding inside a shed. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect will be booked into the Thurston County Jail for Protection Order Violation (DV), Attempting to Elude, and Burglary in the Second Degree.

Great work by everyone involved. We also greatly appreciate the assistance from the drone pilots with the Lacey Police Department and a K9 handler from the Olympia Police Department, who quickly responded and assisted with the track alongside K9 Asher.

Did you know TCSO K9 teams are trained and certified in locating evidence?

Tonight, Yelm Police Officers were dispatched to a theft from Walmart in Yelm. Asset Protection advised dispatch the suspect left on foot toward Old McKenna, walking behind the sound wall on the East side of the parking lot.

A Yelm Officer happened to be in the area and located the suspect, who began running from him. The Yelm officer was able to catch up to the suspect and take him into custody without incident.

While searching the suspect before transporting to the jail, a fully loaded pistol magazine was located. The Yelm Officer believed the suspect may have discarded the firearm during the foot pursuit.

K9 Asher was requested to respond for an evidence search. During the evidence search, K9 Asher indicated in a wooded area not far from where the suspect was taken into custody. In this area, a loaded firearm was located.

The TCSO K-9 unit works hard to ensure they are most capable for these types of deployments. Great job to the Yelm police department getting a theft suspect and gun off the street. As always, the Chuck-it ball for K9 Asher’s hard work!

K9 Asher: BALL IS LIFE!

Tonight, the same two Sergeants involved in last week’s K9 impersonation incident once again found themselves in the middle of a motorcycle pursuit. The key difference this time was that actual K9 capabilities were brought to the table.

After a brief pursuit, the rider ditched the motorcycle and fled on foot—also apparently parting ways with his shoes somewhere along the escape route. K9 Asher arrived shortly afterward and began tracking. The suspect attempted to create some distance by clearing several tall fences, but along the way managed to leave behind a helpful trail of personal belongings, including a jacket, backpack, and riding pants.

Although the track was briefly lost, K9 Asher soon showed heavy interest near a nearby residence and directed deputies to a tarp where the suspect had decided to hide. After some K9-assisted persuasion, the suspect reconsidered his options and surrendered to deputies without incident.

It turns out that while impersonating a police K9 may work in theory, the real thing tends to be far more convincing. 🐕🚓

🚨 OFFICIAL STATEMENT 🚨

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit has initiated a formal investigation into reports of a Thurston County Sergeant impersonating a police service dog through unauthorized barking.

This incident is being reviewed for:
• Professionalism standards
• Proper use of vocalizations
• Potential violation of “Good Boy” protocols

At this time, no actual K-9s were harmed, disrespected, or outperformed. However, several have reportedly expressed disappointment at the lack of proper form.

The investigation remains ongoing. Findings will be addressed internally… and likely remembered forever.

We thank the public for their cooperation and Sheriff Sanders for providing the tip necessary to launch this investigation. K9 Igo, K9 Manny, K9 Mac, and K9 Asher take these allegations very seriously.

Last week, I stopped a motorcyclist for driving down the shoulder on Rich Rd and riding without a helmet. The rider stated he just purchased the bike and was on his way home in Tumwater.

I opted to give the rider a break, and in exchange the rider agreed to have a friend bring his helmet to him before he finished his commute home.

Last night, a TCSO Sergeant attempted to stop the same rider on the same bike for reckless driving in Tumwater. The sergeant was unaware of my previous traffic stop at that time.

The rider fled and a pursuit was initiated. The rider eventually tried flee into a wooded area but got stuck and attempted to flee on foot. Two TCSO Sergeants gave chase.

The Sergeants pretended they had a K9 with them (no dog actually on scene) and began barking at the suspect, who eventually fell down and was taken into custody.

The motorcycle was impounded

Tonight, K9 Asher and his partner signed into service and were enroute to the office when they observed a speeding vehicle in the area of Latin’s Cider Mill. K9 Asher and his partner attempted to pull the vehicle over, but he fled at a high-rate of speed and a pursuit was initiated.

After a brief pursuit, the suspect stopped and attempted to flee on foot, with K9 Asher, his partner, and a former K9 handler (now Sergeant) in hot pursuit.

K9 Asher was able to chase the suspect down and assist his partner and the Sergeant with taking the suspect into custody.

K9 Asher’s favorite reward for such good work you ask? A ball and some time in the patrol office with with his work friends! Good Job Asher!

Earlier tonight deputies were dispatched to a robbery with a gun that had just occurred outside of their residence. The victim stated the suspects had fled on foot right after. Units responded and quickly established probable cause for robbery 1st degree.

K9 Mac was on scene and began a track to locate the suspects. K9 Mac located the scent and tracked directly to a near by residence. One suspect exited quickly and a search warrant was obtained for the house. Once a warrant was granted two more suspects were taken into custody.

K9 Igo and K9 Mac are the hide and seek champions tonight! 🥇

Earlier tonight south county deputies were dispatched to a report of 6 people that were “tagging” a fence. An altercation, ensued and multiple subjects pulled out handguns and fled on foot. K9 Igo quickly got to work and started tracking. Igo located two of the handguns under trailer during his track. He then continued on, and located two suspects hiding in the woods. While that was taking place three subjects tried to run away but ran into another deputy on perimeter, one gave up and two kept running with a drone overhead. K9 Mac then started to track those suspects and located one trying to crawl away.

A short time later Mason County requested TCSO assistance with a pursuit entering our county. The pursuit went through Thurston and ended up crashing in Grays Harbor County. Mason County requested the assistance of K9 Mac to locate the suspects. K9 Mac tracked from the car and found two suspects hiding in the woods. While searching for the third supect, the suspect called 911 and wanted to turn himself in because he was scared he was going to get bit by K9 Mac.

Great teamwork by all involved tonight!
