To our fellow students at The Evergreen State College,

The Gʷídəq Student Union would like to express our sadness regarding the shooting of two unarmed young black men, Andre Thompson and Bryson Chaplin, by white Olympia Police officer Ryan Donald early this morning. Our thoughts are with Andre, Bryson, and their family.

We encourage you to attend the campus-wide discussion in the Library Lobby at 4:00 this afternoon, and the Emergency Meeting/March happening at Woodruff park (On Harrison East of Division) at 6:00 this evening. It is important that in the coming weeks we give each other the community support that we will surely need.

If you have any suggestions for how your Student Union can better serve you during this time, please send us an email at [email protected], drop by our office in Student Activities, or come by one of our Wednesday meetings from 1:15-3:00 in CAB 301.

Yours very truly,
Andrew L. Pawlicki-Sinclair
Chair of the Gʷídəq Student Union

The GSU will be cancelling tomorrow's regular meeting in observance of Day of Absence. Your student union considers DOA to be a vital component of our community, not just as a tradition, but also as a constantly evolving learning opportunity. The cancellation is in an effort to make sure that all GSU members (the students) as well as representatives can participate in DOA activities to the fullest extent. Ballot Items for Reference:

WashPIRG Fee Vote:

“WashPIRG (Washington Student Public Interest Research Group) is a statewide, non-partisan non-profit organization, which does research, education, service, and action on environmental, consumer, higher education, and hunger relief issues. WashPIRG chapters across the state pool resources and hire a staff of professionals to work with students on issues that concern us as citizens. WashPIRG is overseen by a student Board of Directors.

Do you support the continuation of a WashPIRG chapter at The Evergreen State College through a $8 per student, per term waive-able fee? Any student choosing not to support WashPIRG may waive the fee.”

CRC Fee Vote:

“Evergreen’s recreation center is an aging and outdated facility that fails to meet current and prospective student needs and interests. The new Health, Wellness, and Recreation Center will include:

· Co-located health and counseling services with the recreation center.
· Expanded space for health and counseling services from 7000 square feet in Seminar I to 9000 square feet integrated with the renovated recreation center.
· Gender-inclusive locker rooms and restrooms.
· Energy-efficient infrastructure with natural ventilation, sustainable equipment and practices, and increased daylight
· Completely renovated structure between the gym and pool that provides spaces that are physically and emotionally safer and more affirming for all students.
· Flexible programming options, such as the covered recreation area next to the building (“play shed”) and the fully day-lighted workout terrace, climbing wall, and multipurpose rooms.
· Improved navigation of the facility inside and out – it will no longer be an obstacle to walk around, but will become a central connection with all of campus.
· Added access between Housing and the CAB – it will become a central connection between lower and upper parts of the campus.
· Informal and “hangout” spaces such as an updated game room.
· A wellness garden that connects the CAB to health and counseling.
· Significantly decreased maintenance costs.
· More information and images for the entire project are available at www.gogeoducks.com/wellnessrecreation

The main structure is about 40 years old and has been slotted as a capital renovation project since at least 2001. However, the legislature has placed non-academic facility renovations as a very low priority and funding from the state is severely limited, thus the need for student participation in the project.

The CRC Modernization Steering Committee has been working with architects and consultants to determine student aspirations for improved programming and a renovated facility, with two surveys of the student body (Spring and Fall 2014) and multiple focus groups informing all aspects of the predesign. Student involvement and decision-making will continue to be a key feature of this project past this initial stage, as there will always be changes in the transition from predesign to design and build.
A Renovation Steering Committee will be established with more than half of the official positions designated for students. This Committee is charged with advising on the management of the project and ensuring that committees associated with the project have more than half of the official positions designated for students (e.g., for a 15-member committee, at least eight members will be students). The process for selecting students to serve on committees will follow the standard process of being appointed by GSU.

Student input will continue to drive decision-making throughout the design and construction stages over the next two to three years, and students’ voices have already played a deciding role with the various elements: For example, based on results from the Fall survey, students were clear that they did not want to fund a synthetic turf field or a saline pool with the fee increase, so those items were removed and will be considered outside of the scope of this project. Additionally, the decision to include the “play shed” and to collocate health and counseling with the new recreation facility was based on the Spring survey results and student focus groups.

The preliminary design concepts inform the proposal of a $10/credit hour fee for Olympia campus students, which for a typical 16-credit program would be $160 per quarter. The result will be an integrated facility combining health, counseling, and recreation services; programming, space, equipment, and infrastructure upgrades adaptable for future student needs; and attention to nearby outdoor spaces and building access. Fee collection will begin Fall 2015, with the planned funding model resulting in a 20-year-period of fee collection. And for those alumni who pay the student fee but do not have an opportunity to use the new facility, they will receive a transferable lifetime membership.

In addition, the College will seek state funding for further addressing upgrades to basic building systems and infrastructure, and private fundraising from donors and businesses will be pursued to support the sustainability of the new facility’s operations.

For your reference, the work informing the improvements, fee development, and preliminary design concepts may be found at www.gogeoducks.com/wellnessrecreation.

Do you support the proposal of a $10 per credit hour student fee, which for a typical 16-credit program would be $160 per quarter, to fund the CRC renovation to create a modern Health, Wellness, and Recreation facility? _ Yes _ No”

GSU Fee ADVISORY Vote:

“The Gwideq Student Union (GSU), the student government of The Evergreen State College, currently operates on funding awarded by the S&A Board. The equivalent each student pays the GSU for its operation is (as of Winter Quarter 2015) approximately $2.90/quarter. Currently, the GSU is restricted by the S&A Board on what their current funding can be spent on.

Would you support the GSU establishing an independent, opt-out student fee for the GSU’s operations, managed by its Representatives? This vote is an advisory vote and no fees will be instituted as a result.”

GSU Constitutional Amendment Vote:

“Do you support the following amendment to the GSU Constitution on the number of Representatives in the Union?

Article V will be amended to read: 17 representative seats will be reserved for undergraduate students from the Olympia campus. Two representative seats are reserved for students from the Tacoma Program, one seat is reserved for students from the Grays Harbor program, and one seat is reserved for students from the Reservation-Based Campuses. The second seat of the Tacoma Program will be reserved for a Fall Election, modeled after the Fall Election held on the Olympia campus. All non-Olympia representatives, with the exception of Tacoma’s second representative, must be elected by Week Nine (9) of Spring Quarter. Two representative seats will be reserved for first year students, and two representative seats will be reserved for transfer students who wish to join in winter quarter. Elections for both will be held by referendum Week Eight (8) of Fall Quarter”.”

Bridges Selected as Evergreen's New President

"To Our Students, Faculty and Staff:

It gives me great pleasure to announce that the board of trustees of The Evergreen State College voted today to name George Bridges, PhD, as the college’s next president.

Selected from a field of nearly 100 candidates, George has been president of Whitman College, a nationally recognized private liberal arts college in Walla Walla, for the past decade. He previously served as dean and vice provost of undergraduate education at the University of Washington. He holds degrees from the University of Pennsylvania (PhD, Sociology, and MA, Criminology) and from the University of Washington (BA, Sociology).

As we learned through the search process, George is an exceptional leader with deep experience at public and private institutions, large and small. It was clear from our interviews and campus forums, and from speaking with his professional colleagues, that George will be a strong and effective advocate for Evergreen and its bold approach to interdisciplinary teaching and learning. We’re extremely pleased to have him as our next president.

Evergreen’s presidential search process was informed by a search committee that included faculty, staff, students, alumni, trustees and representatives of the wider community. I would like to thank each and every person that served on this hard working committee, including: Sarah Pedersen (chair), Gerry Alexander, Kandi Bauman, Kelly Brown, Craig Chance, Kathleen Eamon, Fred Goldberg, Richard McGrue, Donald Morisato, David Nicandri, Susan Opprecht, Andrew Pawlicki-Sinclair, Gilda Sheppard, Lynda Weinman, James Wigfall, and John Carmichael (DTF liaison to the board).

I would also like to thank the students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the public who attended the forums for each candidate and offered feedback to the trustees and committee members.

Our new president’s official start date is October 1, but he will be on campus for several events this summer and fall, including fall convocation.

I know I speak on behalf of the trustees, the search committee and the campus community when I say we are thrilled to welcome George Bridges to Evergreen.

Sincerely,
Keith Kessler
Chair
The Evergreen State College Board of Trustees"

Update from Michael Zimmerman, on the Evergreen Gallery, 3/11/15:

"I’m writing to update you on the status of the Evergreen Gallery. The good news is that the continuation of the Gallery has been assured for the foreseeable future. At the same time, steps are being taken to enhance the role the Gallery will play both on campus and in the Olympia community. Let me explain.

As you undoubtedly know, as of this past July all expenses associated with the Gallery were moved onto a Foundation account dedicated to the Gallery. This was done as part of the College’s budget cutting process due to a shortfall in enrollment. There was enough money in that account to ensure that the Gallery remained open and operating for 18 months with the goal being to create enough time to look for a more sustainable solution. By repurposing some existing funding and using some new sources of revenue, I have been able to sequester enough funding to ensure that the Gallery remains an integral resource for exhibits and teaching on our campus through the end of the next biennium. The intent, obviously, is for the Gallery to be as permanent a fixture on campus as any other operation.

Beginning with the start of Spring quarter, a number of changes will occur that will permit us to craft an exciting future. As Greg Mullins steps into the Deanery, he will be the administrator to whom the Gallery reports. This will permit Greg to think holistically about ways in which many resources in the Library can be more fully integrated and thus have an even more positive impact on campus and beyond. I was excited to hear Greg talk about his vision for such integration during the recent search for a new Dean. During the next two years, Greg will work closely with Ann Friedman in the Gallery as well as faculty and staff across the College to raise the profile of the Gallery, hopefully, both on campus and in the Greater Olympia community.

At the same time, this change in reporting lines will free up some time in Michelle Pope’s schedule thus permitting her to pay even more attention to the operation of our visual art studios.

I’d like to thank all of you who have come forward in support of the Evergreen Gallery and look forward to our continued collective work to ensure its bright future.

To the Evergreen community,

As those of you on the Olympia campus are aware, the Winter Ballot, which included items such as the Health and Wellness Center/CRC remodel fee vote, the WashPIRG fee vote, and proposals from your Gʷídəq Student Union has closed as of yesterday evening. However, most of you based on the Olympia campus may not be aware that the ballot is just opening up for our fellow students in Tacoma, Gray’s Harbor, and the Reservation-Based program this coming week. This staggering of the vote was due to an unforeseen incapability born out of Administrative Computing’s latest upgrade of the technology that they use for our elections. We have been assured that the issue can be fixed within a longer timeframe, and hopefully this staggering of voting times will be avoided in the future.

In a practice of solidarity and unity, the GSU voted to release the results from this current ballot only when every student, no matter in which program that student is enrolled, has had the opportunity to vote. We realize that this ballot has been one filled with dialogue, controversy, and passion, and we understand that the results of the votes are highly anticipated; your patience is appreciated and we do not take it for granted.

We will announce the results of the Winter Ballot promptly on Monday, March 23rd.

Very truly yours,
Your Gʷídəq Student Union Representatives

03/03/2015

Dear students of The Evergreen State College,

It has come to the attention of the Gʷídəq Student Union that members of our campus community have been defacing, removing, or otherwise altering materials related to the vote on the proposed Health and Wellness Center/CRC renovation fee. Both the informative kiosks about the proposal and the signs encouraging students to vote ¨NO¨ have been targeted in these actions.

We, your representatives in the Student Union, would like to take this time to remind you of our shared commitments as a part of this learning community: to learn across significant differences, to treat each other with mutual respect, and to protect one another’s freedom of speech. These are our elections: initiated, preserved, and facilitated by the hard work of students and staff-members alike. It is a testament to our institution's commitment to student advocacy and egalitarianism that members of the administration must seek approval from us (the students) to impose such a fee.

Student involvement in this ballot - be it to garner either support or opposition to the ballot measures, brings us a great deal of joy. We are proud to see students involved in the discourse that will shape this college for decades to come. But we ask all of you, as our fellow students, to please engage in the discourse in a respectful way that protects everyone’s right to engage. Please post materials, engage in conversations, and continue to make our community a thriving one. But please refrain from vandalizing or destroying informational materials about ballot initiatives, no matter how much you may oppose a measure. To destroy one’s informational materials is to destroy that person’s very right to engage in discourse.

Very truly yours,

Your Gʷídəq Student Union Representatives
