Olympia Timberland Library

Olympia Timberland Library The official page of the Olympia Timberland Library in historic downtown Olympia, Washington. Olympia joined the Timberland library district in 1968.

In December of 1896, the Women’s Club of Olympia established a library service with “reading matter” donated by citizens. In March 1909, the city offered to take over the collection of some 900 volumes and maintain a public library. The Olympia library was housed in a Carnegie building at 7th and Franklin until 1978 when a new library was built and opened at 8th and Franklin. The library underwent

extensive remodels in 2000 and 2008. In 2000, the building was recarpeted and painted; a meeting room was converted to additional space for the children's area; and new public computers, computer stations, a teen area and shelving for about 10,000 additional items were added. In 2008, the circulation and information desks were replaced, the building was recarpeted and painted in bright, warm colors, the lounge furniture was replaced, and the computer stations were refurbished.

Following the recent agreement with the union to limit the scope of proposed layoffs, Regional Managers were asked to review local staffing levels and usage patterns and to recommend changes to open staffed hours. The new hours ensure sustainable staffing and operations while the district continues to develop a plan to increase its revenue.

Effective Sunday, May 17, 2026, the West Olympia library, located in Capital Mall, will no longer be open on Sundays.

West Olympia Library's Revised Hours (same as the Olympia Library): Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Patrons are encouraged to call or visit their local branch, subscribe to library emails at TRL.org, or check TRL.org/locations for the most up-to-date information on open hours.

Each year on March 31, the world observes Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) to raise awareness about transgender people. It is a day to celebrate the lives and contributions of trans people, while also drawing attention to the disproportionate levels of poverty, discrimination, and violence the community faces compared to cisgender (non-transgender) people. Come check out the display downtown for books, zines, movies, and more! 💙🤍🩷
