Eid Mubarak! I am so proud to be celebrating Eid al-Adha for the first time as an officially recognized holiday in the state of Washington, after passing my legislation last year! Official recognition sends an important message to the people of Washington - our Muslim friends, family, and neighbors are important, they are valued, and they are welcome here. At a time when Islamophobia is growing across our country, when elected officials are saying and posting hateful things about Muslim Americans, and our constitutionally protected religious liberties and faith-based institutions are being terrorized, it is so important that Washington state be a place where everyone can practice their faith free of fear and judgement, no matter what faith that is. I am thankful to serve my district, this state and all of the beautifully diverse people in it!

Guided by our mission to advance racial equity, remove systemic barriers, and expand opportunity for communities of color across Washington, we’re proud to share a snapshot of key priorities championed by the Members of Color Caucus that were signed into law this year.

While not the full scope of our work, these wins reflect meaningful progress toward protecting civil rights, strengthening accountability, and investing in community-driven solutions. Our voices are strongest when we come together and we remain committed to this work in partnership with the communities we serve.

Indian Americans have been an integral part of our state for more than a century. Recognizing Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas as a legislatively recognized day in Washington is about belonging. It is about acknowledging our state’s religious and cultural diversity and making sure our Indian American community feels seen, respected, and celebrated. These observances highlight shared themes of renewal, compassion, and unity.

I am pleased to share that SB 6044 passed the Senate on Tuesday with a vote of 48-1 and now heads to the House for consideration.

It was a joy to welcome members of Washington’s vibrant Indian American community to Olympia for the 77th India Republic Day.

Senate Resolution 8674, sponsored by Senators Dhingra and Slatter, served as a powerful reminder that our democracy is not guaranteed. We must fight for it every single day. Both senators spoke about the shared democratic values of India and the United States and emphasized the importance of recommitting ourselves to the principles that define our democracy.
