We are grateful to the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation for inviting us to consult with its Tribal Council about FutureReady, our initiative to modernize Washington's high school graduation requirements. We appreciated the opportunity to share our work, listen, learn, and discuss how graduation requirements can better support students across the state.

What do today's graduating seniors think about the future?

In this spotlight from Cascadia Daily News, students from across Whatcom and Skagit counties share their perspectives on artificial intelligence, affordability, climate change, civic engagement, and other issues shaping today's world.

The State Board of Education believes every student should graduate with the knowledge and skills needed to think critically about complex issues, engage with diverse perspectives, and participate meaningfully in their communities and our democracy.

Thank you to the students who participated in this project and to the educators, families, and community members who helped elevate their voices.

In discussions, students from Whatcom, Skagit tackled artificial intelligence, affordability and polarization

We are excited to announce that Siri Mouat, a sophomore at Walla Walla High School (Walla Walla Public Schools), has been chosen as the Board's next student board member.

“Siri will be an incredible addition to our team,” said Mary Fertakis, Chair of the Washington State Board of Education. “She brings an important rural student perspective that will strengthen the conversations we are having about educational equity across Washington. Her experience in legislative advocacy and student organizing will be a valuable asset to the Board’s work, and we look forward to working with her over the next two years.”

Mouat will succeed current student board member Abby Wu, a graduating senior at Pullman High School, who will complete her term on the Board at the end of June.

Programs like these show what’s possible when education and industry work together to create meaningful career pathways for students.

This Everett pre-apprenticeship program, run by nonprofit Machinists Institute, is helping young people build hands-on manufacturing skills, earn industry experience, and prepare for high-demand careers after high school. It’s a strong example of the kinds of flexible, real-world learning opportunities that can help students thrive in a changing economy.

The first cohort of students is expected to graduate from the new program by the nonprofit Machinists Institute next week.
