"Additionally, Washington is projected to gain 30,000 new jobs annually over the next 10 years if the deduction remains in place, including an annual GDP increase of $1.9 billion for the first decade and $3.8 billion per year beyond 2035."

“Washington small businesses look forward to working with former Attorney General Rob McKenna, former state Supreme Court Justice Phil Talmadge, and groups such as the Citizen Action Defense Fund, in stopping this tax from going any further,” said Elizabeth Milito, Executive Director of the National Federation of Independent Business’ Small Business Legal Center.

“All throughout the bill’s legislative journey, NFIB took great pains to point out that business earnings are not the same as take-home pay and that 85% of small businesses are organized as pass-through entities for federal tax purposes and report their business earnings and expenses on their personal income tax forms.”

“NFIB’s latest Jobs Report does not come as much of a surprise, although it was interesting to see that finding qualified employees – let alone any employees – remains an intractable problem, as it has for a decade now. Washington state’s job outlook remains even gloomier, with no net job gains forecast in the near term. The imposition of a new income tax on certain small-business owners all but guarantees more job losses on Main Street, unless voters overturn it.”

The so-called ‘progressive revenue’ it promises to raise targets Main Street but exempts Wall Street. Your favorite local, family-owned restaurant or downtown retail shop may be forced to raise prices or consider closing its doors thanks to the Millionaire Tax, while billion-dollar national chains and big box stores somehow escaped it.

“This is another instance of indifferent lower courts deferring to out-of-control bureaucrats who ignore the spirit and plain letter of the law, causing real harm to the very people that law is intended to assist,” said Patrick Connor, state director for NFIB in Washington. “I am proud that NFIB‘s Small Business Legal Center is willing to stand with family farmers and other small-business owners seeking to correct these injustices.”

“The majority party repeatedly mentioned they were doing this to help small business, a nod to the expanded B&O exemption for very small firms.

“Had they listened to our state’s small-business owners and representative organizations, they would’ve heard loud and clear that small business does not want this new income tax.

“One of the few amendments unexpectedly adopted was a tax break for hospitals and a handful of the state’s largest physician groups, including Optum and UW Physicians, reinforcing how tone deaf the legislative majority is to our small medical practices and other small business owners.”

“As Main Streets across America are feeling the pressure of increased competition from Big Business, Washington’s small-business owners are bracing for another massive tax increase that will make it ever more difficult to keep up. The so-called Millionaire Tax will squeeze family-owned businesses’ cashflow and working capital while Wall Street corporations enjoy another Olympia tax exemption.”

“Washington state is experiencing net zero job growth while small employers throughout the rest of the country scramble to find enough workers to fill vacant positions. Olympia’s bad decisions—like a $9.5 billion tax hike last year, and this year’s proposed $3.5 billion so-called ‘Millionaire Tax’ that will hit Main Street, not Wall Street—continue to drive job creators away, resulting in less state revenue, not more. While not headline grabbing like Starbuck’s announcement of a new headquarters and job transfers to Tennessee, Washington small businesses continue to shed jobs due to the state Legislature’s misguided tax and regulatory policies.”

“Every NFIB-member small business owner in the state was asked their position on the so-called Millionaire Tax. 98% of respondents were a resounding ‘No!’ With such a visceral response from employers and entrepreneurs, NFIB has a duty to ask the public to join us in telling lawmakers ‘Do not tax Main Street like it’s Wall Street. Vote no on the Millionaire Tax.’”

“Leave it to Olympia to make millionaires out of people who don’t make a million dollars,” said Patrick Connor, state director for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) in Washington. “Or, as some small business owners have told me, my business might – in a rare, good year – make a million dollars, I don’t.”
