IT’S PAINT. ON A MAP. IT’S A PAINT MAP. YOU KNOW THE DRILL. As you head out to enjoy your weekend, keep in mind we have a LOT of work happening before we pause our major projects for World Cup games.

Here’s what’s going on this weekend:

-SB I-405 is CLOSED in Kirkland between NE 124th Street and NE 70th Place until 4 a.m. Monday. Expect major backups throughout the I-405 corridor and heavier congestion on alternate routes. A note: We closed the southbound on ramps from Northeast 124th and 116th streets to I-405 after several wrong-way drivers put themselves and others at risk.

- WB I-90 ramp closures at the I-90/SR 18 interchange continue through 5 a.m. Monday. Expect congestion and delays on WB I-90 in the Snoqualmie area near Preston/Fall City (exit 22) and High Point Way (exit 20), and on EB I-90 near the Snoqualmie/North Bend exit (exit 27) due to detouring traffic.

- EB SR 520 and associated ramps between I-5 and Montlake Boulevard are CLOSED until 5 a.m. Monday. This work prepares for an upcoming traffic shift as part of the SR 520 Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project.

- SB SR 509 is CLOSED near the Port of Tacoma until 5 a.m. Monday near the Port of Tacoma from Taylor Way E to Port of Tacoma Rd

- SB I-5 is CLOSED in Vancouver between NE 179th Street and the I-5/I-205 split from 10 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Sunday.

- NB I-5 across the Ship Canal Bridge remains reduced to two lanes. Express lanes remain open northbound 24/7, but expect constrained travel through Seattle.

One bright (green) spot on this week’s Paint Map: the Vantage Bridge remains OPEN until June 1. “Right on Time”, as Brandi Carlile would say. Starting June 1, we’ll have periodic single lane closures to do work under the bridge through the Fourth of July weekend. After that, the bridge will go back to full-time lane reductions.

Remember to give yourself extra travel time and to check the travel maps in advance.

PROGRESS! The first of two emergency repairs on SR 20 North Cascades Highway has finished!

Our contractor has finished rockslide repairs at milepost 131, which means we can push the closure point east to milepost 134. This restores access to Diablo Lake Vista Point and Ross Dam Trailhead from the west side! Our maintenance crews will do a final sweep through the area, and we expect to reopen those 4 miles of road by 6 a.m. Saturday.

We know this isn’t as exciting as a full reopening, but we are thrilled that we can check one of two emergency repair projects off.

Crews remain hard at work repairing washout damage between Canyon Creek Trailhead (MP 142) and Granite Creek (MP 148). On that site, they are rebuilding highway embankments at three washout sites, restoring more than 1000 feet of undermined and collapsed roadway and shoulder, and repairing damage drain systems/guardrail/concrete barrier.

As a reminder, until those repairs are complete, SR 20 remains an active work zone between Ross Dam Trailhead (MP 134) and Porcupine Creek (MP 156). For the safety of workers and travelers, no access is permitted within the closure area, including for hikers, cyclists, and campers.

We will keep you updated on the next big milestone!

Are you sad because we're pausing our biggest construction projects in June during the soccer matches in Seattle? Oh boy, do we have a consolation prize for you!

Starting in June, we'll have not one but TWO highway closures in Kitsap County. And they start on the same day!!! We'll pause for the celebratory cheers.

The morning of June 13, crews are set to close SR 3 near Sunnyslope Road in the Gorst area around the clock for 16 days. That same evening, Sedgwick Road (SR 160) will close in Port Orchard for about four months.

Both closures allow crews to improve fish migration under the roadway.

Find out more about the project and how to get around the closures in our blog: https://wsdotblog.blogspot.com/2026/05/detours-ahead-fish-frenzy-brings-two.html

Remember, if he wanted to make you his cone, he would. Meanwhile, we’re coming in HOT with another weekend of major closures across the Puget Sound region before Seattle’s summer of soccer kicks off and a lot of our BIG work goes on pause. More on that later, let's talk about this weekend...

May 29–June 1

- SB I-405 will CLOSE in Kirkland between NE 124th Street and NE 70th Place from 11 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday. Expect major backups throughout the I-405 corridor and heavier congestion on alternate routes.

- EB SR 520 and associated ramps between I-5 and Montlake Boulevard will CLOSE from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. This work prepares for an upcoming traffic shift as part of the SR 520 Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project.

- WB I-90 ramp closures at the I-90/SR 18 interchange will begin at 9 p.m. Friday and continue through 5 a.m. Monday. Expect congestion and delays on WB I-90 in the Snoqualmie area near Preston/Fall City (exit 22) and High Point Way (exit 20), and on EB I-90 near the Snoqualmie/North Bend exit (exit 27) due to detouring traffic.

- NB I-5 across the Ship Canal Bridge remains reduced to two lanes. Express lanes remain open northbound 24/7, but expect constrained travel through Seattle. Speaking of which...

NEXT WEEKEND (June 5–8):

- NB I-5 across the Ship Canal Bridge will CLOSE so crews can pick up the Revive I-5 work zone before travel to and from soccer events picks up.

BEYOND
Once games begin and fan zones activate, we're pausing a lot of our big work until the festivities wrap. That means fewer full freeway shutdowns on corridors like I-5 and I-405, but you can still expect to catch us out there doing work like lane reductions, overnight ramp closures and other assorted cone activities.

With all that in mind, plan ahead, take transit when possible and use tools like our real-time travel map so you can know before you go!

The opening of the mountain passes always feels like the unofficial start of summer. And to kick us off, SR 410 Chinook Pass and SR 123 Cayuse Pass through Mount Rainier National Park are now OPEN for the season! Crews have been clearing snow, installing signs and painting road lines to open this Memorial Day weekend.

REMINDER: Commercial vehicles are prohibited!

Enjoy the open road! (Safely 😎)

What it is? What it does? It’s the return of the paint MAP!

It’s Memorial Day weekend and, per usual, we’re here to paint you a beautifully crafted picture of what to expect: gridlocks, glizzies and GRIZTRONICS (we considered calling it GLIZ-tronics but our legal team said "u can't"). While most highway construction work takes the weekend off, the rest of Washington absolutely does not. Expect heavy traffic across much of the state as festivals, concerts, sporting events, ferry travel and the annual migration of Washington campers all happen at once.

A few tips:

- All four lanes of the I-90 Vantage Bridge will be OPEN Friday, May 22, through June 1.*

- If you plan to be on I-90, US 2, I-5 between Tacoma and Lacey, or I-5 at Canadian border this weekend, we have a travel chart for you! Use this to plan the best times to leave and come back: https://wsdot.wa.gov/travel/holiday-weekend-travel/memorial-day-weekend-travel-times

- Taking your vehicle on the Washington State Ferries this weekend? Great! So is everyone else. Plan ahead!

- Finally, you can always refer to our mobile app (WSDOT in the App Store and Google Play) or our travel map to check real-time traffic conditions: https://wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/

Remember to give yourself extra travel time and to check the travel maps in advance. Safe travels!

*Note about Vantage Bridge: After June 1, we'll have periodic single lane closures to do work under the bridge through the Fourth of July weekend. After that, the bridge will go back to full-time lane reductions.

UPDATE: an earlier version of this post mentioned the Seattle Waterfront Marathon, which is not an event taking place this weekend.

How do you pronounce “clousres” ?

So yeah that’s what happens when you write a word backwards so you don’t run out of room and then have a lil dyslexic moment. 😮‍💨

ANYWAY. Yes, most of our projects have been paused for the weekend. This means all lanes of the I-90 Vantage Bridge are OPEN, but we’ll still have reduced lanes across the NB I-5 Ship Canal Bridge until we pick up the work zone in early June.

That said — people are going to be eager to get out and about this weekend. So traffic will be TRAFFICKY. If you’re heading across the state for the holiday, reference our travel charts for the best (and worst) times to hit the road Friday through Monday.
