Say hello to your new Program Coordinator for Volunteer Services of Lewis, Mason and Thurston Counties! We are excited he has joined our amazing team!

Hello Volunteers!
My name is Richard Calkins, but most people who know me call me Ricky. I’m taking over for Rebekah here at Volunteer Services with CSS. I grew up in small town of Edmond, Oklahoma and have been living in the Pacific Northwest the last ten or so years. It’s a beautiful place, full of great people and I’m looking forward to getting to know you all and providing as much support as possible so we can get things done for the people who need it.

Today we said “Goodbye” to Rebekah Graham at Volunteer Services! We will miss her time, talent and amazing smile on our team. We all made sure at our farewell to wear beanies and hoop earrings to wish her well on her new career venture!

It’s been a true blessing to watch you grow into the best Program Coordinator you could possibly be for Volunteer Services! Cheers to you my friend! You will be missed!

Sometimes in this job I just need to sit back a moment, breathe, and allow myself to be completely humbled by the kindness of volunteers, the trust and outreach from those we serve, and the incredible partnerships that form when people come together to realize how we can make a better place for our communities. Volunteer Services with Catholic Community Services is honored to give a huge, heartfelt THANK YOU to the VS volunteers who helped with preparing and making 111 deliveries of Thanksgiving Food Baskets to clients in Thurston county this past Monday, to the clients who signed up to receive these meals, to the absolutely incredible Thurston County Food Bank for their commitment in making this event happen every year and for all they do year round, and to the Griffin Elementary 4th grade class that made "Enjoy Your Meal!" celebration cards for clients. You all made this Thanksgiving brighter for so many - thank you. If you are ever interested in volunteering please call the Mason, Lewis, Thurston county VS/CCS Program Coordinator at 360 726 3885 or [email protected] for more information on how you might be able to get involved. Just look at this happy crew!

The lovely Ms. B recently received a new wheelchair ramp constructed for her Mason County home! With the help from some INCREDIBLE volunteers from St. Michael’s Parish in Olympia and with funding provided from St. Vincent de Paul in Thurston County and Ms. B’s family, a safe, ADA accessible ramp was able to be constructed for Ms. B. Huge thank you to her wonderful, caring daughter, Ann, who initially put this request in to our Volunteer Services program. What a blessing to see everyone come together to ensure safe access and egress for a senior homeowner in the community’s more rural areas. Endless gratitude to Deacon John Bergford from St. Michael’s Parish in Olympia in taking the lead and coordinating this project to successful completion, to the St. Michael’s Home Repair group who built the ramp, to St. Vincent de Paul for their generous funding, to Ms. B’s loving family for their support, and to Ms. B for accepting the service coordination from Volunteer Services with Catholic Community Services. Offering services where we can work with meeting clients where they are to help a client age safely in place is a huge piece of what Volunteer Services every day strives to do for our communities of seniors and adults with disabilities who are independently living. These success stories couldn’t be done without the compassion of volunteers! For more information on how to volunteer in your area please reach out to [email protected] or call 1-844-851-9380.
