This week’s decision to weaken the Voting Rights Act is a sobering reminder that the right to vote is never guaranteed.

As Chair of the Members of Color Caucus, I’m proud that we anticipated moments like this and took action to strengthen protections here in Washington.

When federal protections are weakened, states must lead. We remain committed to ensuring every voice is heard and every Washingtonian has fair access to the ballot.

This week’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to weaken the federal Voting Rights Act is deeply concerning and damaging to our democracy. The Voting Rights Act was hard fought and won through the leadership and sacrifice of Black Americans and communities of color, and it has long served as a cornerstone of fair and competitive elections in our country.

While the full impacts are still unfolding, one thing is clear, it introduces real uncertainty for voting rights protections here in Washington state, especially for communities that have historically faced barriers to the ballot.

It was a powerful moment of reflection and recognition at the Washington Indian Gaming Association’s dedication of tribal nations flags.

I was honored to share a few words about something we don’t say often enough: tribal nations are sovereign governments. That truth is rooted in the very foundation of our Constitution, and it deserves to be recognized not just in words, but in action.

In my district, tribal nations are a driving force, not only culturally, but economically. They are leaders, employers, and partners shaping the future of our region in meaningful ways.

But what stood out most to me yesterday is that progress doesn’t happen on its own. It happens because of people. Tribal leaders who show up every day to serve their communities, to heal, to lead, and to keep moving forward.

That’s the legacy we honored. And it’s one I’m grateful to witness and support.

Today, and everyday, we honor and remember the courage of Capt. Ariana Savino who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. My heart is with her family and loved ones grieving this unimaginable loss. Capt. Savino was a resident of Covington, and a member of our 47th legislative district.

She and five brave Airmen answered the call, left home to serve their nation, but never returned. Their loss of life is devastating, and their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Capt. Ariana G. Savino, 31, of Covington, was a member of the 99th Air Refueling Squadron, which is stationed at Sumpter Smith Joint National Guard Base.

Balancing our tax system will give families of color a better chance to deal with the high price of everyday expenses, unexpected emergencies, or to plan for the future.

I am proud to help strengthen the sports wagering bill (SB 6137) that passed the House Friday and is now headed to the Governor’s desk.

I added two important protections to the legislation. First, stronger anti-harassment protections for players, coaches, and officials. Second, a ban on prop bets on athletes, along with coaches and officials.

Sports betting should never put athletes or officials at risk. These changes help protect the integrity of the game and the people who make sports possible.

The students, representing tribal communities from across the Puget Sound, brought incredible energy and pride with them. It is always a privilege to recognize the leadership, culture, and service of our tribal communities.
