From youth leadership to legislative action, our committees are hard at work creating a more inclusive, accessible, and resilient state.
Here is a look at what we are tackling right now and how you can get involved:
🏛️ Legislative Committee: Advocacy in Action
Decisions are made by those who show up! We are already building the strategy for our next major rollout. If you want to dive into policy analysis, build relationships with lawmakers, or help elevate lived-experience perspectives directly to Olympia, we need you on the committee.

💡 Education & Outreach Committee: Connect. Educate. Empower.
We believe every Washingtonian deserves the resources they need to live independently. Through our comprehensive action plan, we are driving impact in four key areas:
Operation Connection: Multi-city outreach tours connecting rural and urban communities.
Disability Justice Education: Sharing the deep history and clear future vision of our movement.
Information Access: Creating plain-talk, multi-language, fully accessible resources.
Community Engagement: Building strong partnerships with local organizations.
🌟 Amplifying Youth Voice
We are actively building an inclusive committee that includes youth and young adults with disabilities, advocates, and stakeholders from across the state. If you are between 16 and 24 years old, we need your unique perspective to help advise the council and promote independent living philosophy!
👋 How to Stand With Us
Whether you are a seasoned advocate or brand new to the legislative process, your perspective is a vital asset. Help us ensure that "Nothing About Us Without Us" is a reality.

📢 WASILC on the Road: Bringing Emergency Preparedness to Yakima!
The Washington Statewide Independent Living Council (WASILC) is officially on the move! Council Member Susan Pniewski and Jim House, our Certified Emergency Independence Program (CIEP) Manager, ventured to Yakima today for the first stop of our "Operation Connection" community outreach and training series.
Why We Are Here
When disasters or emergencies strike, the cross-disability community is often disproportionately affected. We believe that safety, preparedness, and disaster planning must be fully inclusive and accessible to everyone.
These statewide outreach trainings are designed to:
Empower Individuals: Providing plain-talk, practical strategies and tools for personal disaster preparedness.
Bridge the Gap: Connecting rural and urban communities directly with emergency management resources.
Build Resilience: Ensuring the lived experiences and access needs of people with disabilities are at the forefront of local emergency planning.
Nothing about us, without us—even in emergency management!

The next event will be in Spokane. Register now!

We know that Washington State is home to some of the most dedicated, fierce, and innovative disability advocates in the country. Now, we want the whole nation to know it, too!

Nominations are officially OPEN for the 2026 NCIL Advocacy Awards, and we want to see our local leaders on that stage in Washington, D.C. this July.

We are looking for: 🌟 Young Leaders (24 and under) who are sparking disability pride (Diana Viets Award). 🔥 Fierce Advocates who have spent years fighting for disability justice (Judy Heumann Award).

Washington is doing big things—let’s make sure we get the recognition we deserve.

How to nominate: Check out the details at https://ncil.org/2024-annual-conference/advocacy-awards/ or reach out to us if you have someone in mind who represents the best of our state! Nominations are due by June 5, 2026.

New census data highlights a critical gap: the U.S. is still failing many individuals with disabilities during and after disasters. This is a call to action for all of us.

At WASILC, we are committed to ensuring that the disability community is never an afterthought. We advocate for systemic changes and inclusive emergency management strategies that prioritize autonomy and safety for everyone. Advocacy starts with preparation and partnership.

Join us for our upcoming "Operation Connection 2026" community outreach trainings to learn how we can better integrate access and functional needs into emergency response:

All Disabilities. One Movement. One Voice. ♿️👁️🧠👂

May is a powerhouse month for the disability community. From Global Accessibility Awareness Day to Mobility, ALS, and Mental Health Awareness, we aren’t just highlighting one diagnosis—we are celebrating the entire Cross-Disability Community.
At WASILC, we know that whether a disability is seen or unseen, physical or cognitive, our goals are the same: Independence, Choice, and Access.
This May, we’re calling for a world where:
• Digital spaces are born accessible for the Blind and Low-Vision community.
• Physical communities are built for universal mobility.
• Communication is seamless for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
• Support systems are robust for neurodivergence and mental health.
We don't advocate in silos. We move forward together because an accessible Washington is a better Washington for everybody.
How are you showing up for the cross-disability movement this month?

🚨 Crisis in Georgia: Are We Prepared to Protect Everyone? 🚨
As we watch the devastating wildfires intensify in South Georgia—with the Pineland Road Fire alone scorching over 30,000 acres—our hearts go out to the communities in Clinch, Brantley, and Echols counties.

But at WASILC, we are also asking a critical question: Is the cross-disability community being seen?

When "mandatory evacuations" are ordered, or when smoke makes the air "unhealthy," the impact is not equal. If we don’t have inclusive emergency plans before the smoke appears, we cannot prevent the loss of life.

The Reality of Exclusion
Imagine these scenarios in a disaster:

Deaf/Hard of Hearing: If alerts are only audio-based, how do they know when to run?
Blind/Low Vision: If smoke obscures landmarks, how do they find a safe route?
Wheelchair Users: If shelters lack backup power for medical equipment, they are trapped.
Rural Communities: If there is no plan for those with high-intensity needs, the most vulnerable are left behind.

Washington: Get Involved & Get Prepared
We cannot wait for the fire to reach our backyards. "Nothing About Us Without Us" is a survival strategy. We are hosting a series of Operation Connection trainings to bridge the gap between responders and the disability community.

To our Panelists and Attendees,
Thank you to everyone who joined our Expertise in Action panel. To our panelists: your willingness to share your expertise and lived experience is what moves the needle for disability rights in Washington.
For those in our audience, I hope you enjoyed the conversation and can take a moment to reflect on these shared stories and join the movement to advance equity across our state.
A Special Note of Appreciation
I want to extend a massive thank you to Hannah and Dion for their tireless work in putting this event together on behalf of the WASILC Education and Outreach Committee. Their dedication to creating a platform for these voices is what makes our collective advocacy possible.
A Vital Takeaway
The most vital takeaway from our discussion is that disability is an experience that is different for everyone. Because there is no "one-size-fits-all" journey, our mission must be to promote independent living for everyone. We must ensure that every individual—regardless of their specific needs or location—has the agency to lead their own life.
Bridging the Gap: Yakima & Spokane
The conversation doesn't end here. We are taking this momentum on the road with our Operation Connection training series. These events are specifically designed to help first responders and individuals with lived experience connect, build mutual understanding, and ultimately save lives.
We invite you to register and join us at our upcoming locations:
• Yakima Training: May 27, 2026 | https://bit.ly/4rKrM3A
• Spokane Training: June 18, 2026 | https://bit.ly/4bza9xh
A Final Thought "Nothing About Us Without Us" is more than a slogan; it is a profound declaration of human dignity. It reminds us that while we may all walk different paths, the right to self-determination is the common ground upon which we must all stand.
Onward,
Courtney Williams
