Washington State Parks is transforming the Foster Family pass program! Starting June 1, 2026, foster and kinship caregivers can apply for a physical Foster Family pass card. The pass card will ease the reservation process and provide proof of eligibility to Parks staff including rangers.

Ever wondered what some of the most common foster care terms really mean? We’re breaking them down one definition at a time! Whether you’re a foster parent, advocate, or just curious, this series is for you.

✨ Today’s term:
Home study specialist – A social worker assigned to assess the applicant’s ability to provide a safe and healthy environment for a child or youth experiencing foster care. The home study specialist is responsible for interviewing potential foster parents, reviewing the application and collateral information to determine eligibility. A home study specialist is assigned once a foster care application and supporting documents are submitted.
