I’m incredibly honored to be invited to Nurse Appreciation Night with the Seattle Mariners on May 5!

Even more meaningful, we’ll be recognizing an amazing nurse who helped care for me during one of the most difficult moments of my life.

As many of you know, I experienced a stroke last year. It changed my perspective in ways I’m still processing, and it’s a big part of why Stroke Awareness Month means so much to me.

The care I received wasn’t just medical, it was personal, compassionate, and lifesaving. Nurses are often the steady presence in moments of fear and uncertainty, and I’ll never forget the people who were there for me.

That experience is also why I’ve supported legislation like SB 5602 / HB 1545, focused on improving cardiac and stroke outcomes through better data, coordination, and continuous quality improvement across our health care system. It’s about making sure more families have access to the kind of care that saves lives.

And more broadly, I’ll always support efforts to strengthen and support our health care workforce, including the nurses who show up every day for our communities.

To now have the chance to stand alongside one of those nurses and potentially throw out the first pitch… it’s hard to put into words what that means.

This May, I hope you’ll join me in recognizing the incredible nurses in our communities and learning more about stroke awareness and prevention.

Warming up my pitching arm!

This week’s U.S. Supreme Court decision weakening the Voting Rights Act is deeply concerning.

This landmark law was won through the leadership and sacrifice of Black Americans and communities of color, and it has long helped ensure fair and competitive elections.

While the full impact is still unfolding, it creates real uncertainty for voting rights protections here in Washington, especially for communities that have faced barriers to the ballot.

The right to vote can never be taken for granted. That’s why we’ve been working to strengthen protections at the state level and ensure every Washingtonian’s voice is heard.

This week’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to weaken the federal Voting Rights Act is deeply concerning and damaging to our democracy. The Voting Rights Act was hard fought and won through the leadership and sacrifice of Black Americans and communities of color, and it has long served as a cornerstone of fair and competitive elections in our country.

While the full impacts are still unfolding, one thing is clear, it introduces real uncertainty for voting rights protections here in Washington state, especially for communities that have historically faced barriers to the ballot.

We anticipated moments like this.

Great to join the Federal Way City Council alongside my seatmate to share updates from the 2026 session and talk about the investments we’re delivering for the 30th Legislative District.

From affordable housing and child care to community safety and transportation, we’re focused on making sure our communities have the support they need to thrive. Thanks for the opportunity to connect and keep the conversation going.

Caregiving is a reality for so many working families across Washington, and it has a real impact on our workforce and our economy.

That’s why the Washington State Women’s Commission is asking employers to share how caregiving responsibilities are affecting hiring, retention, and workplace practices today.

We know access to child care and caregiving support is directly tied to whether people can participate fully in the workforce. Hearing directly from employers will help shape better policies and solutions that support both businesses and working families.

If you’re an employer, I encourage you to take a few minutes to share your perspective.

Thank you to my colleagues and partners in this work!

The increase in private equity investment in health care is concerning, especially as we see states like Massachusetts grapple with the fallout from hospital takeovers that left communities with diminished care. Washington already requires health care companies to provide notice of mergers, acquisitions, or major affiliations between hospital systems to the Attorney General’s Office so they can be reviewed under Washington’s antitrust laws. HB 2548, now signed into law, expands the scope of transactions that trigger the notification requirements for antitrust review. This will help our state better understand who is investing in health care here and strengthen oversight of these transactions. Thank you to Rep. Jamila Taylor for your partnership on this.

Equal Pay Day should not still have to exist, but here we are.

That’s why I’m proud Washington has taken action to strengthen pay equity protections, including SHB 1905. Women deserve fairness, opportunity, and workplaces that value their contributions every day.

Washington’s tax code was built nearly a century ago for a very different economy, and it simply hasn’t kept up with the realities families and small businesses face today.

Big step forward this week as Governor Ferguson signed HB 2304 into law!

This legislation helps increase the supply of condominiums in Washington, creating more attainable homeownership opportunities for working families. Expanding housing options is a key part of addressing our state’s housing shortage, and I’m proud to support policies that help more people put down roots in our communities. 🏡
