As Black History Month comes to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on the history, leadership, and movements that continue to shape opportunities for families across our country.

Black history is an important part of our nation’s story — and an important part of my own. Because of my family history, I understand how vital it is to ensure that every worker has the economic rights and protections they need to thrive.

That’s why I’m proud to support House Bill 2355 — the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, which would ensure domestic workers have the same basic workplace protections many other workers rely on, including fair wages, safety protections, and access to workers’ compensation.

The labor movement has helped create generational opportunity for families like mine. This Black History Month, I want to say thank you to the workers and labor leaders who continue that legacy.

Black leadership is about service, integrity, and paving the way for future generations. 🌿 Sen. John Lovick has spent his career breaking barriers and strengthening communities—both in the Legislature and beyond.

As a former Acting House Speaker Pro Tem, State Patrol Sergeant, and Snohomish County Sheriff, Sen. Lovick has dedicated his life to:
💐 Building safer, more resilient communities
🌷 Expanding opportunities for working families
🌿 Uplifting the next generation of leaders

With decades of leadership, he continues to plant the seeds of progress, justice, and opportunity for all.

This is what Black leadership looks like. Rooted in service. Growing with purpose. Blooming for the future. 🌸

Black leadership is about breaking down barriers and building systems that work for everyone. 🌿 Rep. Debra Entenman is championing that mission through her Office of Independent Investigations (OII) bill, ensuring accountability, justice, and trust in our public safety system.

With her work on OII, she’s planting the seeds for:
💐 Independent oversight of police use of force, ensuring transparency and fairness
🌷 Stronger accountability measures to rebuild trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve
🌿 A justice system that protects every Washingtonian, especially Black and marginalized communities disproportionately affected by violence

"True justice is not just about accountability after harm—it’s about building systems that prevent harm in the first place." – Rep. Debra Entenman

The first Black woman elected to the WA State House, Rep. Peggy Joan Maxie was a fierce advocate for education and tenant rights. 🌿 She fought to ensure access to quality housing and education, knowing that stable communities are the bedrock of progress.

Today, we honor her legacy and give her the flowers she so richly deserves. 💐

Black leadership is about protecting democracy and ensuring every voice is heard. 🌿 Rep. Natasha Hill is doing just that with HB 1750, strengthening the Washington Voting Rights Act to prevent voter suppression and vote dilution.

With this bill, she’s planting the seeds for:
💐 Stronger protections against voter suppression
🌷 Fairer representation for historically underrepresented communities
🌿 An electoral process that works for everyone

"I am committed to being a strong voice in Olympia, working to foster a community rooted in fairness, opportunity, and shared prosperity." – Rep. Natasha Hill

Not only did Rep. Hill help make Washington’s Legislative Black Caucus the largest on the West Coast, but she also made history as Spokane’s first Black legislator.
This is what Black leadership looks like. Taking root. Breaking barriers. Watching democracy bloom. 🌸

One of Washington’s earliest Black lawmakers, Sen. John H. Ryan helped shape the legislative landscape during our state’s formative years. 🌱 A strong voice for equity and opportunity, his legacy reminds us that Black leadership has been part of Washington’s foundation from the beginning.

Today, we honor his work and let his impact bloom. 🌸

Black leadership is about building connections—between people, communities, and opportunity. 🌿 As Vice Chair of both the Legislative Black Caucus and the Transportation Committee, Representative Brandy Donaghy is working to ensure that every Washingtonian has fair and reliable access to the places that shape their lives.

For her, transportation is about more than roads and transit—it’s about equity. That means:
💐 Investing in resilient infrastructure that safely connects people to jobs, education, and essential services
🌷 Ensuring no community is left behind, especially those historically underserved
🌿 Creating a future where transportation is a pathway—not a barrier—to opportunity

"Equitable transportation means building systems that serve everyone fairly, ensuring that access isn’t a privilege, but a promise." – Rep. Brandy Donaghy

This is what Black leadership looks like. Advocating for equity. Paving the way. Watching opportunity bloom. 🌸

The first Black legislator in Washington state, Rep. William Owen Bush sowed the seeds of progress that still bloom today. 🌿 As a fierce advocate for education, he helped establish Washington State University and championed agricultural advancement.

His leadership planted deep roots in our state’s history—roots that continue to nourish generations of Washingtonians. Today, we give him his flowers. 💐
