🌲🔥 Sweat today, safety tomorrow! 🔥🌲

This past weekend, several of our members laced up and crushed their annual Wildland Pack Test.

To qualify for wildland firefighting deployment, our members have to power through a grueling 3-mile walk carrying a 45-pound pack in under 45 minutes. No jogging, no running—just pure grit and at a fast walking pace.

We are proud of you all! Plus, they stayed together to complete this test as a team. That’s the Olympia Fire Way! 👏

At the Olympia Fire Department Mark Noble Regional Fire Training Center, our crews spend hours perfecting fundamental skills like hose deployments, ladder placement, and establishing a water supply. Why? Because under pressure, basic skills must be second nature. By mastering the fundamentals, we reduce response times, increase on-scene safety, and ensure we are always ready.

Just like our moto here at the Olympia Fire Department.

🌲🔥 May is Wildfire Awareness Month in Washington! 🔥🌲

Did you know that nearly 85% of wildfires in the U.S. are caused by human activity? That means wildfire prevention starts with us.

Let’s keep this state beautiful and safe together. Always follow these rules:

1️⃣ Check local fire restrictions before any outdoor burning.

2️⃣Never leave a campfire or open flame unattended.

3️⃣Avoid using lawnmowers or equipment that can spark on dry, windy days.

Small actions now can prevent a massive disaster later.🔗 Get more tips and resources at https://dnr.wa.gov/wildfire-resources

🌲🔥 May is Wildfire Awareness Month in Washington! 🔥🌲

Our members at the Olympia Fire Department are actively training and prepping equipment to get ready for Wildfire season. Our big question is……. are you? Wildfire safety is a team effort. We need your help to protect Olympia. Take these four steps today to get your home wildfire-ready:

1️⃣ Create Defensible Space: Clear dead leaves, pine needles, and mulch within 30 feet of your home.

2️⃣ Clean Your Roof: Remove flammable debris from your gutters and roof valleys.

3️⃣ Avoid using lawnmowers or equipment that can spark on dry, windy days.

4️⃣ Sign Up for Alerts: Make sure your family is registered for Thurston County emergency alerts.

🛑The Olympia Fire Department will be participating in a multi-agency training exercise over the next few days, but your daily commute will not be affected.🛑

Need to know:

▪️Drivers near the training site will face no traffic impacts or road closures besides the site itself.

▪️Expect a high volume of emergency vehicles in the area.

▪️This is a scheduled exercise, not a real emergency.

▪️Stay safe while driving by keeping your eyes on the road.

▪️Avoid calling 911 to report emergency vehicles at the designated training location.

Whether you're commuting through Olympia or enjoying a weekend ride, these rules and safety tips can help prevent crashes and keep our roads safe:

🚲 For Bicyclists 🚲

Wear a Helmet: Always use a properly fitted helmet that meets the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards. It should be snug, not rock more than an inch, and sit level on your forehead.

Ride with Traffic: Ride in the same direction as traffic and stay on the far right. Obey all stop signs, traffic lights, and lane markings.

Be Visible: If riding at dusk or nighttime, always use front white lights, rear red lights, and reflectors. Bright or reflective clothing is highly recommended.

Signal Your Moves: Use hand signals well inadvance when turning or stopping so drivers know your intentions.

🚗 For Motorists 🚗

Share the Road: Bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities on the road as motorists. Respect their space and avoid driving in bike lanes.

Give Space: Maintain at least 3 feet of clearance when passing a cyclist on the road.

Avoid Distractions: Put your phone away and keep your eyes focused on the road, watching blind spots and intersections.

Check Before Opening Doors: Always check your rearview and side mirrors for cyclists before opening your car door into traffic.

Let’s keep Olympia safer together!

Seconds count when saving lives. ⏱️🚁

This week, the Olympia Fire Department teamed up with Airlift Northwest and Life Flight Networkfor joint training on alternate landing zones at Providence St. Peter Hospital. When a patient is in critical condition, they often need a specialty trauma center with capabilities beyond what is available locally in Thurston County.

By practicing seamless transfers with our air ambulance partners, we ensure our community gets the highest level of care as fast as possible.

We appreciate you both today, and every day! 💕

Have you heard of the Olympia Fire Department’s free Community Assistance Referral & Education Services (C.A.R.E.S.) program yet? If you haven’t, that means you probably haven’t needed their assistance, and their assistance is always 100 percent confidential.

The C.A.R.E.S team says it best themselves:

“The C.A.R.E.S. team strives to support a healthier community and reduce reliance on the 911 system and local emergency departments for non-acute concerns. We accomplish this goal through advocacy, assistance, education, and mobile-integrated healthcare to the City of Olympia. We believe that everyone deserves to receive sustainable tools and practical connections to increase the livability, independence, and the overall success of our community.”
