This summer, as many as 577,000 Washington children will receive SUN Bucks to help buy food when school is not in session.

OSPI is partnering with Washington state's Department of Social and Health Services to distribute these benefits.

The $120 one-time payment per eligible child will be deposited onto new SUN Bucks cards in June.

“Washington state has continued to expand access to nutritious meals for our young people,” said State Superintendent Chris Reykdal. “Combined with our summer meal programs, SUN Bucks helps ensure students continue to access food during the summer months when they are not in school. We appreciate our partnership with DSHS in administering this program in support of our students and families.”

From the first day of kindergarten to the last day of high school, Washington's public school students receive roughly 13,000 hours of instruction.

That's a lot of assignments, problem-solving, reading, writing, and learning. Students are not alone in their educational journey. Along the way, they are supported by their families, teachers, school staff, coaches, and the larger community.

We asked a group of soon-to-be high school grads who they'd like to thank for helping them achieve their goals and get to where they are today! ❤️

Washington's state constitution guarantees all students a right to basic education.

OSPI, in partnership with the Washington Legislature, worked to increase special education funding in our state to help ensure every student has what they need.

In part three of our series about how school funding is spent, we look at special education, specifically how those funds support students.

The idea that Washington students can't do math doesn't add up!

Each year, more and more of our state's eighth graders are taking high school-level math. Washington's high-quality math education not only prepares students for future success but also helps them build the foundational skills they need in everyday life.

Thousands of students across the state are set for their moment in the sun as they cross the stage at graduation to thunderous applause. 🎓👏Congratulations to the Class of 2026.

"I wish you the very best in your next step, whether that is straight to work, the military, technical programs, apprenticeships, a university, or a 2-year college," said State Superintendent Chris Reykdal. "It all matters, because it's what you want to do, and we need every one of you to be successful."

Each year, tens of thousands of high school students earn college credit through different courses, including Advanced Placement, College in the High School, and Running Start.

At a time of rising costs, these programs not only help students earn college credit but also save families money.

For example, a high school student who completes their associate's degree through Running Start would save at least $10,000.

It's graduation season, a time to celebrate the hard work of high school seniors across our state! 🎓👏

State Superintendent Chris Reykdal stopped by North Thurston High School (Go Rams!) this morning to talk with a diverse mix of soon-to-be grads about their experience in K–12 public education and their plans for the future.

A number of students shared they were off to college in the fall, while others talked about joining the military or starting at a technical school to learn a trade.

Congratulations to the entire Class of 2026 and a special shoutout to the students who shared their stories with us today! 🥳 North Thurston Public Schools

Our hearts are with the Longview community after an implosion yesterday at a pulp and paper mill. First responders have reported that at least two people lost their lives in the incident and that nine others are missing, with another nine sustaining injuries. We are aware that students and staff in our public schools have been directly impacted by this horrible event.

My deepest condolences go out to the victim's families. Tragedies like this have a far-reaching impact. Those who lost their lives were loved; they had friends and family who are hurting and need support.

Our public schools are more than centers of learning. They are also community centers. In times like this, it's especially important to check in with the young people in your life, to answer their questions and offer reassurance.

In Washington state, an estimated 915,000 people identify as Asian American, making up 11.5% of the state’s population. Another 72,000 people identify as Pacific Islander, making up 0.9% of the population.

📚Our public schools reflect this diversity, with more than 103,000 Asian American students and nearly 17,000 Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander students enrolled this school year.

Public schools thrive because of the variety of cultures, languages, histories, and experiences students and families bring to the classroom. Schools across the state offer dual language and heritage language programs in different languages including Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Khmer, among others.

AANHPI communities have shaped—and continue to shape—Washington’s schools, communities, and future. ✨This month, take time to learn something new about AANHPI communities, listen to AANHPI stories, and celebrate together.

You've no doubt felt the effects of high fuel prices on your household budget. The average price of a gallon of unleaded in Washington is $5.78. Rising costs put financial strain on individuals and families.

They also hurt school districts. The jump in diesel prices adds unexpected expenses at a time when districts are already grappling with higher utility and insurance costs. Worse, the percentage of the overall state budget reserved for K–12 public education is declining.

The current situation is challenging for districts, but students still need to get to school. Click through the slides to see the impact of high diesel prices on two Washington districts.
