9/11/2001, 8:46AM, Flight 11 crashes into the World Trade Center’s North Tower.

It’s hard to believe that 25 years have passed since that gut-wrenching morning when our world changed forever.

I was a sophomore at Old Town High School, sitting in Math class when we first heard the news. I will never forget the look of fear and sadness on my teacher’s face as he told us that he had family in New York City.

From that moment on, everything felt different.

The rest of the day was spent watching the news in classrooms throughout OTHS. We watched, we listened, we tried to understand what was happening, and like so many others, we wondered what would happen next.

It was a somber day, to say the very least.

Twenty-five years later, I can still remember that classroom, that feeling, and that look on my teacher’s face as if it were yesterday.

We all have a story about where we were when the world stopped turning.

Where were you?

Twenty-five years ago today, our nation was forever changed.

This morning, we remember the 2,977 innocent lives lost and the families, friends, and communities who continue to carry their loss. We remember the firefighters, EMS providers, police officers, and countless civilians who showed extraordinary courage in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

We especially honor the 23 NYPD officers and 37 Port Authority Police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting and helping others.

As members of law enforcement, we carry their example with us, the courage to respond, the willingness to help, and the commitment to stand together when our communities need us most.

Twenty-five years later, we remember their courage.

We remember their sacrifice.

We will never forget.

Su***de prevention is something that affects all of us, our families, our friends, our coworkers, our neighbors, and our community.

You never truly know what someone may be going through behind closed doors. Sometimes, the person who seems to have everything together may be struggling in ways we cannot see.

This month, we encourage everyone in our community to look out for one another.

💙 Check in on a friend.
💜 Ask someone how they’re really doing.
💙 Listen without judgment.
💜 Let someone know they are not alone.
💙 Don't be afraid to start the conversation.

A simple phone call, a text message, a visit, or asking “Are you okay?” can make a difference. You don't have to have all the answers, you just need to be willing to listen and help someone connect with support.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. Call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Your life matters. Your loved ones matter. Your neighbors matter.

Let's continue looking out for each other and making our community a place where asking for help is met with compassion, understanding, and support.

💜 You are not alone. 💙
