Memorial Day is the day we as a country remember and honor our Military members who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. The Old Saybrook Fire Dept also honors the firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty to our town.

The Old Saybrook Fire Dept lost two of our firefighters in service during World War II and two of our firefighters in the line of duty in Old Saybrook

Private Bondo Marcolini (top left) joined the Old Saybrook Fire Dept on September 2, 1941. He served in the Army in World War II and sadly was the first person from Old Saybrook killed in the war. At the age of 29 on September 11, 1943 in North Africa serving with the 2635th Quartermaster Company of the 34th Infantry he was riding in a convoy and was thrown from a truck and struck by another vehicle

1st Lt John J. LaCastro (top right) joined the Old Saybrook Fire Dept on July 1, 1941. He was an athletic star at Old Saybrook High School later as a teacher and basketball coach he lead the Old Saybrook team to the Class C-D tournament championship. At the time the only person to be on a championship team as first a student and later as coach. Lt LaCastro was a Navigator on a B-24 Liberator called the “Thunder Bay Babe” and took a direct hit in the bomb bay. On March 24 1944 over Mostar Yugoslavia while enroute to bomb railroad yards in Austria. Four of his crew survived and were in a German POW camp for the rest of the war. He was 26.

Assistant Chief Arthur Harrington (bottom left) Joined the Old Saybrook Fire Dept as a Charter Member on September 10, 1924. He died at a Fire on College Street on March 17, 1947 when a grass fire extended to a house and he ran to advise the other firefighters who were with the engine .

Chief Harrington was 73 and a widower.
Henry “Gator” Davis (bottom right) joined the Old Saybrook Fire Dept on April 1, 1975. He died on August 24, 1978. He lived on Middletown Avenue. A fire alarm came in at 6:25am at 7 Shenker Avenue. Firefighter Davis living just around the corner ran down the street to answer the alarm. When the units came around the corner they saw him lying on the side of the road. He was 36 and a father of three.

Let us all remember on Memorial Day the sacrifices of these Men and their families who lost them for their love of Country and Community. See less
