2014 OLD SAYBROOK LIONS CLUB PHONE BOOK

The Old Saybrook Lions Club is taking reservations from local businesses for ad space in the 2014 edition of the Old Saybrook Lions Club Phone Book. The Phone Book is distributed to over 6,000 Old Saybrook homes and businesses before the start of the busy summer season and is also made available to visitors, all at no cost. This is the Phone Book with the colorful distinctive layout and legible print exclusively devoted to Old Saybrook listings and delivered by the Post Office to your box, not left by the curb side.

Sales of Phone Book ads are a total volunteer only effort by the Old Saybrook Lions Club and all net proceeds are given to charities. Our beneficiaries have included Youth & Family Services, Shoreline Soup Kitchen, Rescue Dogs in Afghanistan, local eye care, OS High School extracurricular programs, OS Fire Department, Boy Scouts Troop #51, and many more (see page 7 of the 2013 Old Saybrook Lions Club Phone Book for additional information on our charitable beneficiaries and endeavors). With the hardships imposed on the most vulnerable via state and federal government cut backs in spending, especially for those expenditures impacting education, disabled and the needy, this will again be a critical year for organizations like the Old Saybrook Lions Club to step forward even further with assistance. With the usual generous backing of the entire Old Saybrook community we will be there again to help fill the need. After all, our motto is “WE SERVE”.

Year in and year out the Old Saybrook Lions Club supports the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation. We have even sponsored a guide dog. This is very expensive, please read this story and help us help others. Our wounded warriors are waiting for trained dogs.

OLD SAYBROOK LIONS CLUB AT WORK

A Fidelco guide dog
placement success story.

Dixie was a woman with an active life
in her early forties, she was a mom to
her 2 teenage daughters. Along with her
accomplishments, she had acquired an
Associate’s degree in college as well as
holding several part time jobs. Dixie
was very active in her community. She
found time to volunteer as a Girl Scout
leader and a lifeguard instructor. Her
future was very bright.
Dixie’s life changed forever in 2004, when she lost her vision almost overnight. She was
diagnosed with Optic Nerve Atrophy. What a devastating blow to this young woman with so
many plans in her life. Faced with this tremendous change, she wasn’t willing to give up the
life and activities she had grown to know, especially being a mother to her two daughters.
Dixie wasn’t sure what her future would hold, but she knew she would do everything possible
to take it back. She learned of the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation through her mobility instructor.
Anxious to move on with her life and eager to overcome the limitations of her disability, Dixie
contacted Fidelco. She filled out an application form and prepared the information needed by
the selection committee. She was accepted, and soon after that she received that long awaited
call … “We have a dog for you”. Through Fidelco’s in-community training, Dixie was able to
remain at home and continue to care for her family while training with her new guide dog.
With her placement in the beginning stages, Dixie already knew that her guide dog, a 2-yearold
black and tan German Shepherd named “Cobalt” would bring the confidence she lost when
she lost her sight. Cobalt was as eager as Dixie and together they explored new paths and a
world with hope.
Cobalt gave Dixie the ability to get on with her life. Life was different, but with Cobalt by her
side, Dixie was able to embrace a new life filled with hopes and with dreams just like yours
and mine.
The Old Saybrook Lions Club, with your generous support, gave this woman the opportunity to
regain her freedom and independence by sponsoring Cobalt. For that, we join Dixie and Fidelco
with a heartfelt THANK YOU.
