It's national picture book month. Encourage your middle schooler to pull out some of their old favorites and read them! They can read them to a grandparent/parent or other relative, younger sibling or neighbor, pet, or even just to themselves (they can record themselves and see how they do). Here are the ways that reading picture books can help them become better readers and to build relationships...

IT BUILDS THEIR CONFIDENCE: usually students are more comfortable about reading these because they're shorter and less intimidating
IT HELPS THEM WORK THROUGH DIFFICULT VOCABULARY: we tend to slow down when reading to pets or younger readers. This gives their brain time to see the more difficult words longer before having to get them out of their mouth!
THEIR INTONATION IMPROVES: The way we stop or slow down at punctuation or emphasize certain words (like "Boom!" or "Aw, man!") has time to be perfected when they're not worried about tripping up in front of their peers.
THEY CAN SERVE OTHERS: whether they are reading to an older person whose eyes aren't as good as they once were, a younger reader who doesn't have their skills yet, or a pet who just loves having the attention, these middle grade readers are serving a positive purpose.

Look for ways your child can take the opportunity to read to others. It can ultimately help you and them! :)

So, tell me.... what's YOUR favorite picture book and why?
