National Women Veterans Recognition Day marks the anniversary of the 1948 law that first allowed women to serve as permanent members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Before this act, women served in limited roles and their contributions were often not formally acknowledged. After the law passed, women could finally serve permanently, be recognized as veterans, and receive the benefits they earned.

We’re proud to recognize several veterans on our team today, including Capt. Gammell and Det. Fisher shown here.

We appreciate your service to our nation and your continued commitment here at JCSO!

It's always a "Great Day" to discuss career opportunities! Deputy Rhoden, Deputy Juniel, and Sheriff Roberson recently appeared on FOX4 News Kansas City's Great Day KC. They shared how employees can build long-lasting, rewarding careers through the many divisions and specialized teams available at JCSO. (If you're interested in joining our team, check out the link in the comments!)

After the interview, Deputy Paez joined the group for an opportunity to tour the studio, learn about its history, and visit with journalists who help keep our community informed. We appreciate our media partners and always enjoy getting to know the people and organizations that serve Johnson County and the greater Kansas City area.

Getting to know your teammates before game day matters. Our Public Order Response Team (PORT) trained alongside the Omaha Police Department Mounted Patrol Unit in preparation for FIFA World Cup 2026™ Kansas City events and festivities. Because JCSO does not have its own mounted unit, this training provided the opportunity to build familiarity and coordination between teams before working together this summer.

Throughout the soccer tournament, PORT will assist with dignitary escorts, team bus arrivals and departures, and various events to maintain a safe environment at large public gatherings.

Our team is proud to take part in the Kansas Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. On Wednesday, we joined other agencies to run the Flame of Hope traveled through Johnson County and into Wyandotte County. The JCSO team collectively ran about 55 miles and raised $433! The Torch is now headed to Wichita for the Summer Games.

Many of our employees are involved with Special Olympics year‑round through fundraising and community events. Thank you to everyone who volunteered, participated, donated, or supported along the way. Your generosity creates opportunities for thousands of Kansans!

Scam Alert ❗ After being arrested in Johnson County, an individual received an unexpected call Saturday from someone posing as an official from the JoCo Department of Corrections’ House Arrest program. The caller instructed them to set it up immediately and pay an upfront fee through Apple Pay.

Since individuals in the justice system may interact with multiple agencies, scammers exploit this by posing as representatives of different agencies. We’re partnering with the Department of Corrections to help our residents recognize common scam patterns.

Red flags:
• Fear or panic tactics, especially urgent deadlines outside normal business hours.
• Demanding payment through Bitcoin, gift cards, or money transfer apps.
• Threatening jail, fees, or warrants if you don’t pay immediately.
• Refusing to let you hang up or insisting you only call them back using the number they provide, not publicly listed numbers.

What to do:
• If someone demands immediate payment over the phone, pause.
• Ask for their name, agency, and phone number, then hang up.
• Call a publicly listed phone number from the agency they claim to be from to confirm the situation.
• JCSO non‑emergency dispatch is available 24/7 at (913) 782-0720.

Our explosives detection K9, Riggs, found a missing firearm within a 20-acre area.

Someone reported they lost a firearm somewhere within a large area near some homes. Deputy Stanley and Riggs responded to assist with the search.... And found it in just 18 minutes. Without a K9 team, it could have taken hours to cover so much ground.

Thank you to Deputy Stanley and K9 Riggs for using their specialized skills to keep our community safe!

Vehicle-deer crashes can happen any day of the year on Kansas roadways. While deer season peaks in the colder months, the animals tend to shift their foraging to twilight to avoid the summer heat during the day. This could lead to an increase in deer sightings overnight. 🦌

As we head into summer, here are some safety tips from the Kansas Department of Transportation:
🔸 Be alert and reduce speeds near wooded areas and near water sources.
🔸 Vehicle-deer collisions can happen on any rural or urban roadway – the signs show areas where high numbers have occurred in the past.
🔸 Do not swerve, this can cause motorists to veer into oncoming traffic, run off the road, hit objects or overturn.
🔸 Use bright headlights when there is no oncoming traffic – the deer’s eyes often reflect.
🔸 Put the vehicle’s hazard lights on and keep your seat belt fastened.
